Does anyone know a good product for removing mold from the boat caulk?

Knife and scrappers. Really.

Once mold gets into caulk, its too late. Replace the caulk.

I have had luck cleaning moldy things with this product. It works cleaning mold and mildew off of walls and in caulk in my shower that I thought I would have to redo. . The fumes are bad. It's cheap and worth trying.

Bleach products are only a quick short term fix. The chlorine does not kill the mold. It only bleaches it.

Try 1/2 teaspoon of clove oil mixed into a a litre of water in a spray bottle. Spray it on, and leave it 24 hours. That will kill the mold. Then remove it with dilute white vinegar.

This is simply not true. Chlorine kills mold. If one needs a second opinion please check the back issue of Practical Sailor. They tested mold cleaners earlier this year.

I have a 33' boat with the original 1980 overhead. When I purchased her three years ago, the overhead was covered with mold. I use clorox spray to clean it. The boat is in SFL and ever 2-3 months I clean the overhead with Clorox spray - she looks like new.

Clorox spray is cheap and easy to use. Now I just spray lightly and go for a sail. Some spray more and wipe it off- up to you-- but that sounds like work.

Re: Mold Remover?

Bleach kills bacteria and viruses and sanitizes the surfaces it's used on. Bleach also kills mold if it comes into contact with it. The spores and allergens from mold are neutralized as well.

Bleach will kill mold growing on non-porous surfaces like fibreglass, glass, tiles, bathtubs and counter tops.

However bleach cannot completely kill mold growing in non-porous materials like fabric, carpet, drywall, and wood. Bleach does not penetrate into these non-porous substances and so only the mold growing above the surface is killed. Molds have roots (hyphae) and bleach’s ion structure stops chlorine from penetrating porous materials, therefore when you spray all the chemicals are going to stay on top of your surface while the water part of the solution just soaks through. Bleach won't kill mold on dirty, metallic or porous substances either.

OSHA was the first federal agency to announce a departure from the use of chlorine bleach in mold remediation.

Re: Mold Remover?

Lysol type cleaners work on mold in carpet...

You do have to follow up with a carpet cleaning type product to bind to the dirt, that the mold is feeding on, and make sure you saturate the surface so that it stays wet for at least 10 minutes.

Tough bugger to get rid of, as old dead mold is food for new mold... So you've got to change the conditions, change the PH of the surface, and get it sparking clean.

Vinegar works on mold. Changes the pH and the molds die.

Good question, I want to know too. Exit mould has been great sprayed into the back corners of the shower and cupboards.
Would be good if you could just use white vinegar put into a spray bottle.

Re: Mold Remover?

The problem is that the mold will be killed but the area will still be black.
