This was one of the few things I brought from my old boat 3 years ago and I've had it now around 5 years. I have it mounted for easy and secure access (it's bulkhead holder is also it's charger). It still works flawlessly everytime and looks and acts brand new.

Other flashlights from many well respected brands failed within a few months onboard. It's costly, but it's always ready, lasts several hours, has an incredibly tough metal housing and is one of the brightest flashlights you can buy (50,000 candle power).

I'll do one better, here's the link 5-Cell Rechargeable on the specs. You can get it from Amazon, make sure it has the 12v rechargeable accessory for use with car/boat. I simply cut off the 12v cigarette lighter type charger so I could wire it directly to my boats 12v. One of the best features is that it has a great charging cradle. It has a firm enough grip that it can hold the flashlight in any position and through any bumps, but when you need the flashlight you just grab the end of it and pull firmly down. That way I can have the flashlight on my bulkhead by my nav station constantly ready with no searching around in a drawer.

I've tried pelican and many other brands, but nothing else lasted.

We have a mag-lite 5 cell, a mag-lit min, an LED hand held, an head mountable 2 AA cell LED light with an incandescent and red LED setting and a 2 million candle power hand held rechargable light. We have gotten the most utility out of the head mounted LED light, comes in great handy when you don't have that extra hand and the high power spot. We have used it to find navigation marks while on those night crawls. All have held up very well after 2 years.

We also have waterproof dive lights, but have not had to use those for boat related activity, yet.

Have Any of y'all tried the new L.E.D. conversion bulbs in your Mag Lites?
Im curios to know how bright they are. Should do wonders for battery life.

Hello !

I can only confirm what was said about rechargable Maglite. I bough it 12 years ago, still works on the same Nicad batteries, and has done more working hours than I care to remember. It is our main light for repairing in dark corners. It still has about two hours of light in it, after all these years, never fell out of holder ( we live on board for 6 months per year ) and I never had to repair anything.

Two notes

- carry spare bulbs and buy them where they are cheap.
- the rubber swithch cover got perforated from use, so it's not watertight anymore. But rain or similar does nothing to it nevertheless. Could not get that new rubber cover anywhere? Any ideas?

It sounds very good. The Xeccon LED flashlight I'm using now is 5 years old now, the quality is also pretty.

LED Lenser by Coast. I'll never use another flashlight. These have the latest generation Cree LED. 200 lumens in a pocket handheld powered by AA batteries with 70 hours of life. It puts out about as much light as the old "million candlepower" spotlights when fully focused. Of course candlepower is a BS way to measure light. They are bombproof too, I've treated 'em rough. Way better than mag lights.

These are controlled devices similar to a laser. Dont point them at people from close up, you'll damage their vision. They use a cree LED that is then focussed through a special lense like a laser, hence lenser. Nice German engineering.

LED Lenser make better flashlights than Maglight, but there are much better models again, particularly for boat use.

Look for something from the Fenix or Thrunite range for example
Like this (the best model depends on what battery and size you want)

I prefer buying mag lites that can use (rechargeable high capacity) D cells. Then I can swap them out with other equipment. I also have some cheapo Aluminum lights (same batteries) as well.

This is an old thread, but still relevant. I would like to see more boats with a good flashlight.

If you like D cells this will give will be much better in every way than something from Maglight

I have 3 of the rechargeable Mags... All at LEAST 10 years old. Most have had a trip back to Mag a time or two for repairs. I love those lights!

However, the heavy incandescent D cell flashlight has gone the way of my old '77 F-250.... Still love them both, but technology has obsoleted them.

+1 on the Lenser!
