Hassler steering vane - who's got one?

Hi there,

A while back I was able to lay my hands on a Hassler windvane. It's now installed, and I'm working on laying out the steering lines and doing the fine-tuning. The leaflets provided by Hassler are helpful, but still leave me with quite a few questions unanswered...

Is there anybody here that owns/has owned/used one of those before? It would be a great help!

Re: Hassler steering vane - who's got one?

Just finished installing MP gear on our 38 Ingrid. I too have not been able to find answers to a few questions and will do my best with trial and error after digesting every bit of information (books, periodicals, blogs etc) available.

How did you make out?

Re: Hassler steering vane - who's got one?

I had a Hassler many years ago. It took us half way across the Atlantic then broke a weld due to extreme weather helm in a strong wind gust.

It was the type with the vane rotating round a vertical axis, these days horizontal pivoted vanes are usually prefered.

If you have specific questions I might be able to help, you can private message me. I also have expertise in control systems.

I recommend you rig it enough to go out and try it and see how it responds, then make adjustments accordingly. Every boat is different.

PLEASE, do right by this hero-in-more-than-one-way by NOT misspelling his name!
