Experience with Foley Engines?

If you've done business with Foley Engines, especially if you had a positive experience, I'd appreciate your feedback.

We're considering purchasing a new transmission for our 1988 Nonsuch sailboat from Foley.

Thanks!

Re: Experience with Foley Engines?

I have not done business with them. Mainly because, if you do some googling you will find a LARGE number of complaints about their poor customer service (and a correspondingly SMALL number of compliments).

Not telling you to stay away from them, but I would suggest doing a good bit of research before jumping in.

Good luck.

Re: Experience with Foley Engines?

We had a problem getting our core deposit back on a water pump. Poor customer service. They didn't seem interested in getting to the bottom of why it hadn't been refunded.

I will go somewhere else next time.

Don't even think about it. Don't even think about thinking about it. Do a search on Foley using the search button above or on one of the Web search engines (for Foley or Dr. Diesel). The results will be very informative. Try (Google) Transatlantic Diesel as a reliable, honest, reasonably priced alternative....

oneupmanship abounds

My experience was not good. Some guy calling himself Dr Diesel seemed to
love playing oneupmanship to establish his vastly superior position in life. After spending some time telling me all about the fact that my Universal 5424 was not likely a marine version of a Kubota he got around to selling me a rebuilt Hurth transmission which promptly started acting like bad Hurth.

As a youth I spent a lot of time dusting parts shelfs and learning the art of counter sales. The good doctor seem to violate all the rules of those days. He seemed very rude. Perhaps such an approach works for Foley but not for me.

Unfortunately, apparently I had not yet discovered CF, but here's a link to my experience with them:

About three years ago I ordered a rebuilt injection pump and four rebuilt injectors from Foley. The business end of the transaction went OK, but like Tom, because of "Dr. Diesel's" extremely rude and abusive attitude I will not do business with them again.

I wouldn't do business with them and they are only a 15 minute drive from here.

Thumbs down Re: Experience with Foley Engines?

I did once, never again. Run, don't walk away & buy from anyone else. BTW, Dr Diesel is the owner.

Bought a 2030 Volvo from "Dr. Diesel" years ago. abrupt, rude, condescending. Atlantic diesel, Boatswains Locker, both do businesss properly.

Re: Experience with Foley Engines?

I bought stuff from them back in late 90s and early 2000s . Mostly for Atomic 4 engine. Over the phone. I didnt have any problems but the guy on the phone was a bit awkward.

Re: Experience with Foley Engines?

It was about 2012/13 that due to a catastrophic breakdown I found I had to rebuild my Perkins 4.107 engine in my Columbia 50 . I searched the web for Perkins people and decided on Foley . I contacted them and explained that I wanted to buy a re-manufactured engine from them . So far so good . They gave me prices and delivery times and I sat on this for a short while . Later when I called them I spoke to a strange individual who immediately took exception to my voice and accused me of having attitude problems and being arrogant . He then said he didn't want my business and refused to talk to me even though I would have willingly paid his price . Three more times I rang him and he refused to talk and just put the phone down .
I gave up on Foley and had my engine done by S&W in Wilmington CA. They upgraded it to 4.108 as well . This wasn't cheap but the engine is still good . It does leak a little oil from the front oil-seal but I have just replaced that with parts S&W sent to me here in the Marquesas by FedEx free of charge .
I can't understand Foley at all and reading these posts I see I'm not alone. I fail to see how they can do business at all .

To quote a sign hanging over a parts counter in an auto parts store, "3,500 years ago Samson slew 1,000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass. Today, millions of sales are killed by the same weapon."
