I tried lots of places to find a simple way of getting a conversion from our European Butane
cooking system to US
propane after crossing the Atlantic. I found it impossible to buy Butane in the US. My cooker,
Plastimo Neptune 3000 runs on either. This seems to be simplest and cheapest option:
European “Camping Gaz” System Adapter To U.S. LPG Cylinders #1190-1625
All you need is this adaptor ($75 ordered through West Marine) and a new
propane tank ($54 from a
hardware store) and off you go. It works, at least for me. Hope this helps other Europeans thinking of cruising in the United States or places where Butane is hard to get hold of.
For Americans going the other way, Trident
Marine make a similar convertor Propane to Butane.
The other option I was told was by a friendly boatyard in
Annapolis was to change the entire system at a cost of $1,600 which they were happy to do for us. And then another $1,600 to convert it back when you go home!
Happy sailing.
