Re: Electric outboards

There are a number of threads here about Torqueedos. People have quite varying opinions.

I for one am excited to go all electric for my 10' dink. I have had a hate-hate relationship with gas outboards and am currently selling mine. However, there are many who swear by them.

I'll be using the proceeds of the sale to buy a 85 lb short shaft trolling motor, a good AGM batt, and a 15w solar panel. I do not need much range on the dink, and I use it only a couple times a week so I'm hoping this setup will serve my needs nicely. I intend to write up a report here about how it goes when I get it set up.

They are good at going slow.

Re: Electric outboards

I was thinking of it for use on a tender when cruising. Thinking of not needing petrol (economics and environment). Don't really need to go far or fast. Mostly to get ashore and back.

Peregrine has it figured out, if you don't need to go far, or need to use it often and don't mind slow being your one speed, likely you will like it.

Re: Electric outboards

One idea would be instead of the independent 15 watt panel ( which wont really do any charging imo just maintain)
Wire up a cord like an extension cord to plug into the motherships charging system when not using the dink.

Re: Electric outboards

I use a electric on a Livingston used as a utility boat around the dock. I like the ability to go much slower than an gas outboard and the battery is no more trouble than fuel cans.
When I was 7 my parents allowed me to use a row boat unsupervised. At 9 I got an outboard. By 9 1/2 I knew gas outboards were unreliable. That was the late 50s. Nothing has changed my mind since.

Re: Electric outboards

We really need some actual cruising feedback on Torqueedo. This isn't that hard.

How come Torqueedo hasn't sponsored a couple of the YouTubers or circumnavigators

Re: Electric outboards

Use my Minn Kota 40 # thrust short shaft for my limited cruising in NE US waters. on my 10 ft. dinghy. Should have gotten bigger but wanted short shaft.
Use 2 -35ah bateries ...charge with solar panel and/or connect to house bank when
extended motoring.
Is slow go but still faster than rowing. (other day had 4 of us and provisions on board)
Better with 1-2 on board, 5-6 knots, but even a modest chop or current will again slow it down.
No gas on board, space, infrequent use/gas outboard issues, prime reason for use on my smallish 30 fter.

Re: Electric outboards

If using a lot and not time to charge I will use at low/mid speeds as batteries will go a lot
further. When I will not be using for the next few days or longer, I will use at full speed
and get around somewhat faster. Never have run out of juice, nor have I needed a seatbelt!
