I see what you mean, I had no idea of the price. I had only looked at the article and thought not a bad idea, but not at that price.

I agree, many great features, but...

Re: Countdown Timer Recommendations?

They are difficult to find. Wind up kitchen times are no good because they tick.

When i buy them I buy one and test it, if its ok, then I get 2. I am on my second set of two now.

I also have an alarm clock I set for an hour so if the two timers wont wake me then the alarm will.

Good point. I bet that would get annoying after a while.

Re: Countdown Timer Recommendations?

You don't mention if you have any instrument displays, but some of them have countdown timers built into them.

Re: Countdown Timer Recommendations?

a. I've never been able to hear any ticking over the wind and engine noise.

b. Yes, the fast reset feature is a blessing. If you wake up early, look around, reset. I keep the timer practically in my hand and snoze on either the tramp or portion of the deck were I can see what I need by only lifting my head. So far, I've never tried to snoze in weather where that was not practical.

I don't know about others, but if I am sailing so far that snozing is needed, I try REALLY HARD to snoze during the day, when it is easy to see and be seen. Can't say I enjoy it, but since I am always relativly in-shore, it feels safer.

Re: Countdown Timer Recommendations?

I'm sure you can find an app for your smart phone for a lot less than $259.

Mark,
I do have a GMI10 display and it does have a countdown timer, but I like to keep it displaying other things (e.g., apparent wind, boat speed, distance and bearing to waypoint, etc.)

I don't deliberately snooze during the day, but I have been known to doze off involuntarily. Also, I've been known to make mistakes, especially when I'm tired, so I'm looking for a really simple timer that I could set for 15 or 20 min to remind me to scan the horizon, and to reset it with the press of a button.

A mechanical kitchen timer would do, but I might miss the short ding and the ticking might get annoying. I have a Timex wrist watch with a timer, but the alarm can be hard to hear and I've slept through it a few times. I think I might get the "Gymboss" as recommended by Ann and Jim Cate earlier in this thread.

Z.

I looked but I couldn't find, so that prompted me to develop something :

(Pardon me if I'm breaking the forum rules with a commercial posting, but it's my first Playstore app.)

+1 for kitchen timer, a friend of mine singlehanded from Cape Town to Grenada, and taped it on his chest with duct tape, by the time he peeled the duct tape he was awake!

Re: Countdown Timer Recommendations?

Here are my two.

The black one is better because theres less key pushes and it resets to the ladt input time.

But its dying in the butt and I could only get the white on to replace it. Its ok but not as good as the black.

Re: Countdown Timer Recommendations?

Ok, this might be the most stupid suggestion of the thread....

Butttttt....

I just downloaded an iPad app that is for cooking but it has 6 timers in it... That can all run simultaniously. In fact each of the 6 timers can have multiple time settings, so I guess you could have an unlimited number of timers....

And its FREE

https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/kitc...648299674?mt=8

Its worth a try...

If I had 6 timers, I could learn to ignore the first five. I need one that sounds like an angry Doberman ... Or a husband returning home.

Stu's app isn't free but there's an easy payment plan for CF members, and the app actually costs more if you post a lot on SA or that other forum for folks kicked off here.

I've just put up a free version of Watch Alert on Playstore:
