Re: Cooler's

We got a Pelican last year and it's performed very well. But still a sizable "mortgage", and we cruise in the Salish Sea - less demand on it than other areas.

Literally about to pull the trigger on the same purchase. After lots of reviews. Videos. Blog posts.

I have decided on the igloo rotomolded cooler brand "sportsman" it's about 240$ for a 55 quart size. From what I can tell, holds ice the same length of time as the big brands at about half the cost.

Re: Cooler's

"Holding ice" doesn't translate directly to everyday use. The better, more expensive coolers have more insulation in thicker walls. There's less room inside for the same outside dimensions. The more expensive coolers are also built better.

You could probably build an insulated box around an Igloo or Coleman cooler and have ice last just as long as the expensive brands.

As you get more experience, you will probably just adjust your expectations to what an inexpensive cooler will do. You will learn to carry food that doesn't spoil in storage.

Re: Cooler's

I have a yeti roadie. The small one, then I have a 60 cheap Coleman. The yeti will keep ice/water for 3 times as long.

Better insulated. Seal on the lid. Insulation in the lid.

Get yourself a rotomolded. I will never go back. Life is too short for crappy coolers [emoji3]

Re: Cooler's

No personal experience, but the RTIC coolers look like nice Yeti copies with great reviews. Their 65 size costs $199

Re: Cooler's

Get ahold of some dry ice if it is available. Yes, it will freeze everything.

If you have the room, consider putting one ice chest inside of another.

I don't get the Yeti's. How many bears are found offshore?

Re: Cooler's

In order to get that kind of ice retention it does cost a little$. I would not recommend a yeti. I have a Cat cooler and it even has two rod holders built into it behind the handles. Best cooler I have found for good ice retention.

How much for a polystyrene box can you show us a picture of this on your boat, or are just trying to include a sneaky advertisement on CF.

Re: Cooler's

If you want to go cheap, buy something from Omaha Steaks (www.omahasteaks.com). It will come in a really good, thick, styrofoam cooler. The more you buy, the bigger the cooler. We have a couple of fairly big ones and they work great.

Of course, you also get some really great food in the process!

Re: Cooler's

Bang for the buck, would go for a Coleman Xtreme cooler. We had a "5 day" extreme and would keep the insides cold in 90+F outside heat for a week (kept inside the cabin).

We used 2 frozen 1 gal. milk jugs. They worked great and you didn't have floating food either. Biggest problem was if you were out longer and had to get block ice, you needed food containers that were well sealed so it didn't ruin your food. Most block ice we purchased were soft and then melted much quicker than the hard frozen milk jugs.

They now make extreme 6 and 7 day cooler, but they drastically jump up in price compared to the 5.

Re: Cooler's

I second the RTIC. I have a small Yeti and a big RTIC. The are similar in quality.
