Re: Blender or What?? on board

Pelagic, I think it depends on what you want to do with the blender. We've lived w/o ice on the boat for years, so don't need to do ice, but I'd do it with a hammer with the ice inside a clean dish towel. For everything else, it is sharp Chinese cleavers, dicing, chopping. I used to have a hand nut mill, liked it, but too big for the first boat, so it went away, and hand chopping works okay.

Had some friends who had to keep their blender top together with 5200 and safety wire.

I do hope someone can refer you to a current brand that is good.

We also have the wand style small blender for immersion work.
+1 the great thing about these is it will crush ice but being hand powered it is infinitely variable speed for making salsas, dips, batters etc. The immersion blenders (stick) are great but they do not crush ice.

Re: Blender or What?? on board

Thanks all.
We used the blender to make spicy soups like carrot/squash or potatoe/leek, Bloody Mary, Smoothies, Salad dressings etc.
Crushed ice is not a big deal as we can use a hammer. We do use a veg/fruit juicer a lot at the house, but it takes up a lot of space, so not sure it will go onboard.

Researching after Delancy's suggestion, I researched what they call "immersion blenders" and wonder if ones like these will last?

We’ve had our kitchenaide immersion for 3-4 years now without issue. For what you’re using it for it would be perfect. It can turn a head of boiled cauliflower into a creamy soup base in minutes. Add some beer and old cheddar mmmm.

Ours never did but we used them for more than blending softened vegetables.
Always flogged out at the weak point which was blade attachment.
Tried a few different brands.

We have one of these as well and highly recommend.
Has no problem chopping raw vegatables, we even turn diced raw meat into fresh mince
Again, tried a few different ones but stripped gears and smoke release killed them.
This one has lasted for years with no sign of giving up.

We used to take our Vitamix with us.
It got to be too much of a chore to schlep it to the boat, so now we have a S 55 small version permanently on the boat.
It gets used a lot.
Happy wife, Happy life.

We've have multiple units (boat, RV, travel bag)...never had one fail.

Then again, we've picked them up at garage sales & flea markets for under $5 so even if we had to buy a replacement every 2-3 years, it's not a big deal.
