Best Large Sturdy Waterproof Container

For most of my small spare parts, plus pasta, etc, I use the containers that Costco uses for nuts and some snacks. They are rectangular so use space efficiently, and the price is right. The tops are screw-on but not waterproof, although a rubber gasket could be added. Being clear it is easy to see what, and how much, is inside. I eat a lot of nuts so over the years I have given away a lot to boats leaving to go cruising.

I used a large drying. Conforms easily to odd shapes, keeps out insects and never had a problem with moisture. Added feature is a clumsy crewman drop it and it doesn't open.

I second the Uline tip! Having used these 5 gallon "square pails" on commercial river trips I can vouch for their being tough and waterproof, and economical use of space:

Note that many restaurants and school cafeterias actually throw out or recycle these buckets and lids and will probably be glad to give you a few if you ask.

My obsession with watertight stuff comes from my old river-running days when everything regularly got soaked. I may be a little over-the-top with my compulsions now. And of course there is always the good old ammo can which you can get in a variety of sizes from any Army/Navy store. What they lack in resistance to corrosion they gain in strength and reliable watertightness.

I pick up square plastic pails from Japanese restaurants. They're used for shipping sliced pickled ginger. Less than 5 gallons.

I use the empty Tidy Cats, from Purina, cat litter containers for storage. Air tight.
About 5 gal capacity.

Slips into the bilge compartments easily.

I spent too much time thinking about my shelving configuration before I found the Vittles Vaults. I picked up various sizes (total 6) and secured them with stratchits because stratchits are easier to adjust due to the placement of my U-bolts. These stratchits come two to a pack with 4 carabiners and are adjustable to 5' rated at 250 lbs. I later framed this out with an open front and solid back.
Pros - strong enough to stand alone, sturdy enough to stack, watertight, weathers well, mine are five years old and still look great. The lids cannot be bent by hand so sun has not compromised the integrity of mine. Really like the wall mount bracket as well for the small ones on top. The 40 lbs side lid has a deep neck and a great angle so the volume is great. Remember you can lay these on the backside if the lid angle fits your shelving better. The top lid 50 lbs is great. If you choose the 80 lbs for the large dog, think about placing it on it's side at the bottom of your shelving. Also like the ability to change if needed. Pet Smart keeps these in stock so perhaps you can get your ideas for your shelving after seeing the VV's. Walmart.com has the best price. Perhaps this will save time and money. Wish I did it in that order.
Cons- don't purchase the size with the black lids, they bend by hand. Stay away from the collapsible blue, same issue.

the translucent bins are sold at Wally's, they are my standard for household "stuff" organization and storage.

Maybe not strong enough in the larger sizes for use as water tanks though, and I think made of that really slippery plastic you can't glue fittings to.

Perfect for lighter dry good though, short-depth ones same footprint as the bigger deep ones, and lots of small sizes that stack 2/4/8 at a time in layers over the bigger ones.

Polypropilene tupperware containers. The ones with side clip tops and an O-ring around the top. Inexpensive. You can get them in many different sizes and shapes, from tiny to 5 lt capacity. Can see immediately what's inside, modular, can stack and nest them. I use them extensively onboard, for food, tools, electrical stuff, screws, nuts and bolts, washers, shackles, and spares of all descriptions.

An alternative approach is to use a vacuum sealer system. This also offers the option of keeping food longer in fridge or freezer.
