I find that disputable. Why would anyone buy something so cheap that it quickly breaks down, needing replacement, and then pollutes the environment like nothing else. As long as people keep buying those, the manufacturers keep making them and making them so cheap and trash quality and the environment keeps suffering.

Re: Best inkjet printer for the boat

The ink cartridges in new printers are maybe 1/4 filled to prevent buyer behaviour like David suggests..
And another vote for HP multifunction printers (scan-copy-print-4colour)

Re: Best inkjet printer for the boat

I always find the problem is I use them so little the cartridges dry up. I also have a HP460, great printer, but Im forever replacing cartridges that have dried up.

Re: Best inkjet printer for the boat

I bought an HP1000j for $30 at Walmart. Extra cartridges for under $25. Small, cheap, fast. Don't need much printing on a boat, I don't use it for an office. Great for printing daily weatherfax and navtex.

Exactly and that will stop when you switch to the iP100.

Oh yes, I tried the $30 printers too. You'll learn that lesson sooner rather than later, but you knew that it isn't gonna last at $30 of-course

If you only need a scanner to make documents, there are several Apps for your smartphone or tablet to make PDFs and what not.

Yeah, no need for a scanner. I do the same with my phone, or I can always use my camera and take a picture of whatever needs scanned.

Turboscan Pro App for iPhone is awesome.

Takes a couple shots, then converts to PDF document.

Used it many times and quality is much better than old fax machines

Sure it is, but you're not gonna make a convincing copy of your drivers license with it for example.

Why ?

'cause he said so.

Took 10 years to select the most awesome printer?

I've only owned 3 since 1986. A pin printer (DOS), an HP722 and the new (last year) hp1000j. Got me where I need to go.

I got a Samsung laser printer last month for $90. Cartridges last 1500 pages and cost $45.

Much nicer quality than inkjet

Re: Best inkjet printer for the boat

May not be what you want to here, but the way I have bought printers, admittedly for work on construction sites, was to walk straight past the printers and into the printer cartridge aisle, find the cheapest and then go looking for the printer it belongs to.
I think the majority of printers are just a means of selling expensive printer cartridges.
My printer of choice was, from memory the Cannon IP 100 or 95. About $14 dollars for a cartridge at office works or 3 bucks down at the local car boot. Sadly, they don't make them anymore.

Cartridges: you just buy the correct ones, i.e. with the correct article number. When you try different numbers it won't work on any brand.

Ordering from Amazon is easier said than done if you are cruising worldwide! Friends with Canons could not buy cartridges in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives or Turkey. As to the correct article number, that is what I tried to explain. As my friend learned, Canon makes cartridges for the same model machine but has different article numbers for cartridges to be sold in the USA and cartridges to be sold internationally for the same model machine. The international numbered cartridges will not work on a machine sold in the USA, only the cartridges with the USA article number will work.

This stuff is simple if one cruises only one geographic region. It gets more complicated when farther afield. As my friend found, international Canon cartridges would not work in her USA purchased Canon machine, even though Canon originally said they would. After higher levels of tech support at Canon the advice was that they would have to buy cartridges only in the USA for a machine purchased in the USA. Other models of Canon machines might have different requirements. But more than one cruising friend with Canon machines has discussed this cartridge problem with us. Making us very thankful that we chanced to buy a multi-function machine that uses the most commonly sold ink cartridge sold everywhere.

(Now....watch the darn think die just because I publicly stated how much we like it.)
