Same for my batteries, after 10 yrs I had to replace two 4D and two group 27's AGM batteries, to the tune of $2K. That's why I am a POOR southern boy. My refit is costing about $25K!!

Sorry, but I have to ask... As 4D's cost $200 each, and 27 gels cost $300 each How does this add up to $2000?

Re: Acco vs Chinese chain

Easy. First you buy them at shipyard and have them change them out. I tried that about 10 yrs when I was 55 yrs young and about 3 yrs into recovery for quadruple coronary bypass surgery. When I went to lift a 130 lb 4D battery from the cabin to the cockpit, I crushed a disk. Whole new meaning to word pain. I laid flat on the dock for about 1/2 an hour until I could stand and get to my car. Many hours of therapy means it only aches about 1/2 the time. Quote the Raven, never more.

Who here has had chain fail , cheap or otherwise. I suspect its a very rare event less than rigging failure.

Please let the rest of know where you can buy 4D agms for $200. I paid $550 each for my last 2 and I shopped around. many were over 700. I paid $284 for my group 27 agms so I could see it coming very close to $2k pretty easily, especially if you got stuck buying them somewhere there was no local competition.

We have sold both Acco and Titan chain. The Acco is US made and had not only bad galvanizing but inconsistent welds. We still have some.

The Titan chain is made in China by Canada Metal in their own factories. Good galvanizing and very consistent quality. Their Titan shackles are also very good.

Canada Metal is also Martyr Anodes - one of, if not the largest anode producer worldwide. Many of you probably have them on your boat.

Canada Metal has also owned Rocna for the last several years.

The quality of their products is excellent as is their customer service.

You can make a good product anywhere in the world - inferior products can also be produced anywhere - third world or first world.

Re: Acco vs Chinese chain

Does anyone know about Laclede chain?

Grade 43 High Test - Laclede Chain Manufacturing

I found it while surfing. It doesn't mention marine applications so I can't easily tell if their grade 43 chain would fit a windlass. The claim is the chain is "Made in the USA" and the price is decent.
