3M Marine Compound & Finish A NO-NO On IMRON Paint??

I bought a quart of the purple label 3M Marine Compound and finish material.. not cheap.. I was about to use it to shine up my 15 year old Imron topside paint, then got some free advice from the boater next to me.. "You don't want to do that" "You should not use that on paint"

So, Is he right? Is it too aggressive for a relatively thin paint compared to gel-coat? or will it leave a build up? OR is his advice worth what I paid for it....?

Thanks!
