+1 given op 's lack of time and experience I think it is the prudent answer.

Sometimes with boats, as with life, the prudent answer is.....no. But that can be the hardest answer to go with.

The biggest problems in cruising come about when people are in a hurry, the same holds true for crew.

It's very hard to press the pause button on the edge of adventure.

Good choice, shows you have maturity and can make hard decisions. Speaks volumes about you as a potential crew member as well.

Me??? Wait for the rally.... You're already rushed to get your personal obligations ready... Nobody takes their first ride on the biggest roller coaster... Fires an RPG when they haven't held a pellet gun... Or chews on cayenne peppers when they haven't had salt...

After speaking to the skipper again yesterday he wanted me to buy the SD map card, about 7 meters of sail cloth and other bits like rowlocks. Plus when I said I wasn't coming he told me he had others interested and was planning to maybe take 2 or 3 crew with him. So who know what he asked them to buy for the boat.

So I'll wait it out and get prepared properly and be in Darwin by the end of June to meet the skippers of boats doing the Indonesia rally!
