What priorities do you have for staying safe

My diesel would always start on the first or second roll over. I could always trust it, for years it never failed Untill it did, when I ran into a sandbar in a twenty knot blow. It's hard to say if anything on a boat is trustworthy or good for sure. Mac

Dockhead has it about right. I would only add - plan your sail (and sail your plan). Get a real chart and study it if you haven't been someplace before. Anticipate hazards, talk to local people about weather, tides and what to watch out for. Don't stare at your instruments, stare at your sails.
- And wear good deck shoes!

Since you're asking this question you're already on the right track to keep your boat and crew safe so you can have a blast on your boat!

RC, a proper answer to your question would take pages!

I'm just going to mention something I classify as safety, and that is having preventers permanently mounted, so that you can always control the boom downwind (or actually, if the shackle for the main sheet breaks --happened once). It adds to the deck clutter when you go forward, but it sure is good . It means Jim can go forward safely without worrying about an accidental jibe.

I think some pretty good 'priorities' have been mentioned so far.

I like this idea of a preventer. I seen a short video of a little sail boat that travels around the world with a man and a woman. All I really remember is the sail boat has no engine at all. This idea was one of their suggestions which I added to my boat. Only clutters up the deck when the boom is all the way out on my boat. It's a great idea.

And bog paper.... don't forget lots of bog paper if going to Venezuala.... what you don't use you can trade for rum.

Here's a web page on jacklines... I still prefer sheeted stainless wires.
I had this type since... 1976 & NEVER stepped/triped on them. Also: Mine are against the roof... how can I put them further inboard ?

In some imaginary world, I think it would be really nice to have a jackline running along the fore and aft centreline of the boat. Really nice, when it's rolling terribly. But we live in the world we live in, and we do the best we can.
