I'd add

Have a way to leave the boat if it become necessary

Have a way to signal for help, after having left the boat

Leave the boat only as a last resort.

As a trailer sailor my main priority is to not lose the kid! This is my boy when we went kayaking last summer, I couldn't keep him in the boat. He insisted on laying on the bow and watching the water go by. I insisted on the lifejacket! I may have to insist on a tether on the sailboat.

I pay about as much attention to safety on my boat as I did on land. My largest thoughts on land as on the boat was comfort. Of course a person naturally learns how to remain safe as they grow up and live in an unsafe world but worrying about it seems a little paranoid to me. mac

We have back up GPSs, safety netting, harnesses, emergency notifying devices, lifeboat, and a hand held VHF.

Golden Safety Rules of Boating:


1. Keep the people in the boat.
2. Keep the water out.


Do these two things and nobody drowns.


All other safety rules should be a derivative of these two.


On our boat, every time we have a bad experience, we determine what went wrong, and make a rule to ensure I doesn't happen again. We are now at rule 38,257. ;-)

In many locations #4 is very difficult and, with a chartplotter, unnecesssary.

Safety can be over rayed. Instead: enjoy yourself.

If you and all aboard enjoy your sailing and cruising you will be more enthusiastic to do more and do it better.

But draconian safety measures ensue a grumpy crew who don't give a Tinkers Cuss for anything but getting off.

Same with kids.
