What is a remote gas tap?

Can anyone tell me what is a remote gas tap?

Do you think a remote gas tap is the standard gas tap you find under the stove - basically the second tap after the gas bottle.

OR is it

an automatic gas tap? which turns off automatically if carbon monoxide is detected?

what are your views?

Re: What is a remote gas tap?

My understanding is that a remote gas tap is the electrically operated valve that is situated in the gas storage area close to the gas bottle. Electrically operated with the switch directly positioned close to the burners in the galley. In this way you do not have to go to the outside storage to close the gas!

Do you think it has to be electrical?

Or can it be the manual gas tap situated under the stove

In other words not next to the gas bottle?

Re: What is a remote gas tap?

No, the whole point of the remote gas tap is that it’s remote from the gas cylinder. So you turn the gas on and off from the galley, without having to go out to the gas locker (which hardly anyone does whether or not there’s a big sign in the galley). You need a valve within reach of any appliance as well, but the remote one is the key to prevent all gas supply outside the gas locker.

Ahhh right, Thankyou I think I understand.

So the turn off valve in the galley isn't enough as there is still gas in the pipes so the remote valve actually is electrical and turns it off from the actual bottle which saves my legs on walking onto the deck.

Seems a little over the top. BUT does make sense now you write it like that.

any ideas where I would find one of these anyone? and what i would search for as searching for remote gas brings me back mainly gas alarms

Re: What is a remote gas tap?

You don’t say where you’re from, but in most civilised countries it’d be illegal to install this yourself. You need to get it done by a qualified gas fitter, who will sign it off and give you the gas certificate you’ll need to get insurance cover and/or be allowed near many marinas. This is not fun stuff to play with, particularly on a boat where there’s nowhere to run.

How about this though? it should work the same way don't you think?

It does cost a whopping £7.....!! BUT I do not see what the difference is except there is no pretty light. And beats £111 for the next cheapest option.

What do you think?

And also...

You want to have your solenoid wired into something like this.. Gas Detector | BEP

That’s an air switch, not a gas solenoid. Seriously, don’t cheap out on this stuff, or if you do make sure you have a large sign saying “boat likely to explode without warning” that people can read before boarding or mooring near you.

Completely unsuitable, thats just some cheaparsed air solenoid valve with no Gas rating....

Where are you based? the country you reside in will dictate what you are to comply with, alarms, auto shutoff etc......

What you want is something like this..
Check out your local motorhome dealer or caravan shop, much cheaper than a marine store and just as good.

If "cheaping out" is not using a branded marine item then yes I am considering it.

The specifications of the Solenoid I listed above seem to say it is gas as shown below:

Specification :

Model Number : 2ACK-1/4-12VDC-G
Valve Type : 2 Way Normally Closed (Valve opens with energized)
Service Media : Air, Gas, Liquid, Water
Operation Model : Direct Acting

Yes, I am fully aware of the problems with gas, It will be fitted by a professional BUT I am not willing to pay for the inflated costs that gas engineers sometimes charge for parts when I can buy it myself for 10 euros.

Another member pointed out one for around 35 euros also which is for RVs

So yes I am buying the parts myself and then getting it sorted out by a qualified gas engineer.

Although.... FYI

The boat already has a gas shut off point on the regulator on the gas bottle it also has a secondary turn off point on the pipe under the stove and It is not a required item for the civilized country I sail in - So I think even if I was to add this solenoid myself to the canister in the well ventilated external locker. I really don't believe it could make it any less safe than changing the gas bottle and not screwing it on tight enough. All it is is an extra barrier on top of what is already present.. again, of course, I would carry on turning off all of the other valves as normal.

But thank you for your brash input.

Thanks that's great - I was looking at a similar one also but i couldn't see a lot of difference. But I'm not a gas engineer the cheap one was worth a try. and ill show it to a professional engineer.
