Re: Whale Destroys Masts Off Oregon Coast

That's what - 2 whales in recent times that have attacked sailboats. First it's pirates marching into our homes and places of business and attacking us all on a daily basis, and now whales! I say it's time for us to rattle those sabres, arm ourselves to the teeth, send in our troops and kill any whale that looks cockeyed at us. It's the American way. Also, there is probably a secret whale conspiracy that big gubmint are hiding from us.

Re: Whale Destroys Masts Off Oregon Coast

I've seen humpbacks breaching completly out of the water a few times.

Really impressive, something I never thougth I would have seen in my life.

Never very close but still impressive.

Re: Whale Destroys Masts Off Oregon Coast

I've posted this before, but here's our encounter with a pair of humpbacks about fifty miles west of San Francisco as we were returning from the 2008 Hawaii race (photo and video): VALIS

Quick helmsmanship by the VALIS crew turned what would have been a T-bone into a glancing blow. You can't see it in the video, but the whale's flukes slapped the shrouds above the lifelines as it was diving. No damage to boat or whale, but very exciting for us. We definitely got lucky.

Re: Whale Destroys Masts Off Oregon Coast

Ol' Moby sank the Pequod but was really after Ahab, who defied the white (God) whale. I guess Queequeg et.al were what we now refer to as "collateral damage."
