Wet Weather Clothing for Melbourne, Australia?

I'm off to Melbourne, Australia in mid February to complete my Day Skippers practical. As I live and sail in SE Asia, staying warm is generally not much of an issue, even in a tropical downpour, but I suspect I'll need some warmer clothing and wet weather gear for the 5days/4 nights of the course. I'm also familiar with "layering", having sailed dinghies in NZ.

So I've been contemplating buying a wet weather jacket and trousers, and have looked at Musto BR1 or LPX, Gill Coast Jacket and Burke CB10 ranges online. I'm mainly concerned that I might purchase gear that is either an overkill or insufficient for the trip.

Anyone used the above on Port Phillip Bay during what I guess will still be summer, bearing in mind Melbourne's "four seasons in one day" weather

Any recommendations/advice would be appreciated....

Re: Wet Weather Clothing for Melbourne, Australia?

were? RYA Feb is the hottest time of the year 30 - 40 and nights low 20s the bay is fun no major problems. If your so concerned take clothes for Asia in winter. As for buying wet gear dont bother as they will supply (at least check) you would get heatstroke way to hot that time of year

If its the one I done you you sail up and down the bay you will not go into Bass Strait, as that was Coastal witch was 8 nights from memory.

Also welcome to C/F

Don't like the weather in Melbourne?

Melbourne is one of the few places that I've lived that has jokes about the weather.

What Melburnians like to remind visitors is the the weather can be very changeable. We visited for a wedding after living in New Guinea and nearly has our ^$$#$ frozen off.

So even in February I'd suggest bringing ('specially after SE Asia) :-
1) Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
2) Light waterproof jacket
3) Thick T-Shirt
4) Swimmers
5) Large Towel
6) Packed lunch
7) Sports drinks.

All the above true, but I did the same course in January and was very glad I had the WWG. Suggest you try to borrow/hire. My course provided it.

Good sailing!

For light weight breathable rain gear we love our Frogg toggs fire bellys, they are the best warm weather foul weather gear weve had and for the price cant be beat. They have all kinds of rain gear at frogg togg .com just depends what you are looking for, but their fabric is durable going on 1.5 years now, and very breathable and stores into a very tiny sack. . The wifes expensive Gill suit lsted a little over a year before threads coming apart.
