Logical or not, he could be the kind of guy who just doesn't feel comfortable being "tracked."

I don't think that the report defined the "sat phone" as a "Spot" type autonomous tracking device. More likely a conventional sat phone that one uses to call someone when desired.

But, we don't really know very much about skipper, boat or equipment. We don't even know if he would be reported to the public if he arrived safely in Oz.

“Our engineer managed to repair the leak. We also stocked him up with 10 days’ worth of food including military ration packs, fruits, milk and even some Weetbix and Marmite. We also filled his fuel tanks with 80 litres of diesel.”

He'll make it..
They gave him the 'Good Stuff'.. not the 'Generic' crap out that way..

That's your problem right there, no Vegemite.

Giving him a generic substitute won't work.

Probably in withdrawal.

No other marine SAR folks are so understanding of the plight of the sailor in distress. My hat is permanently off to them.

I do hope that in time we will learn the details of this event. Perhaps we will learn something useful.

USCG will send engineers, pumps etc over to ailing vessels to try to prevent them from being abandoned. Im really surprised no one else commented on this

Yes, the US will even parachute in people to help the boater until other help arrives. I have read numerous accounts where the USCG have dropped pumps and/or life rafts to people and other reports where they have put people on boats to help the short handed boater get home.

I think most SAR and Navies will try to help as much as possible if they can.

I thought the Marmite came in under the heading of "cruel and unusual punishment" but at least they did not give him vegemite.

Still got my fingers crossed for him.

NZ still obviously closer ties to the old country so given Marmite instead of the new and improved Aussie product.

What's the USCG got to do with this issue?

I'm quite surprised that people think it is strange that the NZ or even Australian authorities would 'help' in rescue scenarios? At least in this part of the world, it's not desirable to simply abandon a vessel if it can be repaired and the people sent on their way. And there are many instances of rescue personal helping to bring a vessel back to port. In fact, I myself had this experience in the 90's and it's what led me to become interested in sail vessels over motor vessels.

Re: Urgent Assistance To Find Missing Australian Yacht

Hi guys,

Tomorrow will be a week since he was last spoken to. I understand he will most likely head back to Montys Marina at Caboolture where he was at previously. I'm not familiar with the place but I'll try ringing someone there tomorrow to see if he's been seen around.

Should he have turned up by now?

What my post has to do w it is that Jim said the NZ was the only CG that will help an abandoned vessel, which simply wasn't accurate. Did you read the entire thread?

Re: Urgent Assistance To Find Missing Australian Yacht

Marmite is very good for you its yeast extract ... its the leftovers from beer production... I had to "deal" with my ex's grandfather who had memory problems around that age.. its not fun..
when people get to that age some act like children.
they also get very angry at others for no reason..
he "secretly" married the cleaning lady...and gave her all his money.. just to show he was "well" ..... she then left him penniless and even more angry.. after all that he asked me to drive him to church,, so i did.. no worries ... he then punch me if the face while i has driving on the freeway.. because i could not find big band music on the radio..
