Type I Life Jacket W/harness?

For offshore, has anyone ever seen a type I life jacket with a internal harness. It's funny I can't seem to find one. A lot of the type II and III's, mostly inflatable, come with a harness attached. But something that is required by USCG/SOLAS doesn't seem to come with any attachments.

I know the object is to stay on the boat. But what if one has to ditch the boat and may want to attach to a life raft, or each other for that matter?

I guess one could wear a harness under the life jacket, but why should I have to.

Re: Type I Life Jacket W/harness?

Delmarrey, It's just a guess but I think Type 1 jackets are too big and bulky to wear all the time so there isn't enough of a market for one with a harness.

I think the inflatables with harness are the way to go. They are comfortable to wear and when inflated have more flotation than a Type 1 noninflatable.

Re: Type I Life Jacket W/harness?

At the moment, "Type I' And "harness" are officially mutually exclusive, because one of the key USCG criteria for a Type 1 is that it be quick, easy and obvious to don for basically anyone (as in total landlubbers taking day sighting seeing trip), and the USCG thinks that adding/combining a harness makes it potentially too complex and difficult to put on . . . thus no type 1's with harness.

Typical bureaucracy! They want you to have the best but don't want it to be functional.

I normally just wear my inflatable (w/harness) anyway. I've got a bunch of type I's (for passengers, if need be) but I wouldn't wear the cheap things unless that's all I had. I've got a jet ski jacket that I like when it's cold or in the dinghy.
