Re: Skin Cancer from Long-Term Sun Exposure
1) All of my clothing is sunblock SPF 50+ or higher
2) SPF 50+ wide brimed hats
3) SPF 60+ sunblock lotion for face, nose, ears and other exposed area's
4) UV cloves
5) UV sun glasses
6) UV canvas bimini or even better a hard bimini over cockpit and helm
7) Stay in the shade as much as possible
Even on the hottest days my UnderArmer SPF 50+ clothing seems to feel cooler than exposed skin. The new fabrics are pretty amazing.

Nice tan, but you may want to see a Dermatologist for your face. That big grey spot could be an issue

Re: Skin Cancer from Long-Term Sun Exposure
UV. One of the reasons I never got rid of all those dress shirts I used to wear. Sunblock, a Tilley hat, long sleeved shirt, light weight long pants, and eventually a bimini.
When I first started sailing in 79, I met a lady who lived on a 5.5 meter sloop. We got to be good friends, and finally I got around to asking her how old she was. I was shocked, and I think it showed on my face. I had thought mid 5o0s. Turned out she was 28. Sun. Wind. Lots of it. She had a face and skin like mahogany. Dry, and rough mahogany.
No thanks. I like my pasty white complexion.

Re: Skin Cancer from Long-Term Sun Exposure
I seldom used sunblock and no issues yet. Always wore a hat and sunglasses, just because I hate being directly in the sun. Still, everyone is differnt. When I was forty I knew a couple we cruised with, she was mid 30's but had been in the sun alot. Pretty woman but super wrinkled from the sun.

Was born a redhead myself and what it did for me was to be very very aware of the sun and sunburns. Could never seem to get a tan, quit trying so I cover up pretty much completely. 68 yrs and counting, no use trying to change behavior now.

Re: Skin Cancer from Long-Term Sun Exposure
When i was 18, I went to the beaches of Nice, France and got scared by all the old bikini clad ladies (probably not that old) whose skin looked like an old saddle bag. I always cake myself in sunscreen (helioplex 100). 20+ years later not that bad.
But remember that the water reflects the sun too, so a hat may not be foolproof.
- Sunscreen protection rules
Recent stories have shown the diets high in lycopene (cooked tomatoes, tomato paste) with reduced signs of sunburn verse those without. Italians have a lower percent of skin cancer than others.
Try this quiz at the bottom and see how you due.

Actually, Cotemar, you may need to see an Opthomalogist. It sounds like you have a cataract.

As a kid, the Mother of my best mate (2 doors down) was a committed sunbather (always in the backgarden on a sun lounger - in a Bikini .........and was also firmly in the MILF category ).
Probably in her late 20's / 30's back then. met her again 20 years later and she looked like she was 95. and had been dead for several years......still the colour of mahogany though .
