Re: Sailing the Fierce 50's

Arctic Muckboot are good down to about -10c or -15c I'd say, both for getting wet, and standing around in the Snow. I use them mainly for Zodiac work, and wet beach landings, followed by walking around for a few hours in them.

Only time I got wet feet was standing in the surf with King Penguins on Sth Georgia Islands, and it came over the top a few times. (Yes, less than ideal !)

I'm not sure about sailing grip, but they work very well on wet rocks.

I sweat quite a bit, and havn't had any problem with feet 'swimming' in them.

I'd say their biggest issue, is over about +10c, they get uncomfortably warm.

Also getting them on and off can be a right pain in the neck. Its not something you just 'slip off when you go inside'.. I carry a small plastic thing you stand on to make them easier to take off. (Can post photo if anyone wants when I get to the boat tomorrow).

Highly recommend them.

Regards

Mark.

Re: Sailing the Fierce 50's

An effective way to have warm hands and feet is to have a warm head and body. When our core cools a bit, the body automatically starts shunting blood flow away from the extremities and to the core in order to keep you alive.

Also.....stay dry. Water cools us ~17 times faster than air. I think that is the right number.

I really like this but wonder if this may be equally good?

Below 40 degrees, there is no love.
Below 50 degrees, there is no God.
Below 60 degrees, there is no hope.

Opinions?

No love in the South Island of NZ? You've got to be joking.

Still makes more sense than "No law below 40"?

Stockholm at above 59N I am sure there is God, god or gods there. On our visit I counted more churches and mosques than native Swedes.

The proverb part needs a serious haul-out and repair. Times changed. Love is everywhere now.

The saying is "Below...South..."

And it dates back to the days of Sailing Ships when there may well have been some truth in it.

Re: Sailing the Fierce 50's

Here is a link to all the gloves and mittens made that feature Gore-Tex waterfproof membranes. This is a visual catalog that shows multiple manufacturers' products.

I recently sailed with someone who was wearing Gore-Tex "Bike Wear" gauntlet style gloves that he said worked perfectly to keep his hands warm and dry. He swore by them, as he often rides his bike in the rain around Portland and previously in Boston, even during cold months.

On my recent cruise to Newfoundland, I wore my Muckboots "MuckMaster" (model) on a few occasions (water temp was as low as 42 degrees Fahrenheit). They kept my feet warm and dry. They provide very good nonslip grip on molded in decks, good grip on rocks or piers or docks or metal boat decks, do not leave marks on white fiberglass decks. Mine are the "MuckMaster" version ( about 15" high up above the calf) and are waterproof, warm, and neoprene. Good for walking in boggy shores and wet beaches too.

Yep. Not much God there, if you asked Truganini.

Re: Sailing the Fierce 50's

Ive mostly got my warm stuff from cheap outdoor stores when its on sale, or as daggy secondhand stuff. Polerfleece doesn't seem to really wear out from a warmth point of view. I still use some 15 year old stuff.

My exception to the cheap stuff is the merino wool thermals . Its expensive but worth shelling out for.

I usually get by with mid to low end wet wx gear, but I have a few sets on hand, normally a good new waterproof set and and older sprayproof set. I'd love a drysuit for really nasty weather.
