Safety Stancions

I realize that most safety stanchions are connected by stainless steel wire, would it be a mistake to use some kind of rope or line instead of SS? The holes in my stanchions could take a 1/2" line.

A quick search of other threads on this forum should turn up a good discussion on this. It was recently addressed.
