S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

Dear All,

This is a Pan Pan Pan for s/v MARATONGA. She left Norfolk Virginia on July 13. On board 3 male persons. They had a SPOT GPS which stopped transmitting on July 26. Last known position 39.5839 N and 61.33664 W and nothing heard of ever since

They were on their way to Azores, then Lisbon (Portugal) and Cadiz (Spain)

MARATONGA 52 ft ketch, steel.... dark blue hull with wide white stripe in which 10 portlights each side. Hard dodger and Center Cockpit. Last known registration number is GPC 8509 (Costa Rica)

Please spread the word and let's try and locate them. The MRCC Azores / Portugal are also informed as wel as UK and the Netherlands

Thanks,

Carla

Re: S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

I plugged the position into Google Earth. The last known position is on the rhumbline 720 nm out from Norfolk, which works out to 55 nm per day. I wonder why they were making such low miles in a 52 ft ketch.

Carla -- do you know if, in addition to the Spot, the boat had an EPIRB on board, or if any of the sailors carried a PLB?

Re: S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

I believe the dates given in the first post are out by a month and should be August rather than July. Based on conversations with a close relative of one of the crew is who is a friend of my partner.

At the speed they had been travelling their arrival in the Azores should be imminent. Fair winds permitting

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately the dates I gave in my first call for help are correct. That is why we are extremely worried !!!!

The last contact was on JULY 26 with the coordinates 39.5839 N and 61.33664 W as per SPOT GPS

OK Andrea told us August so we were not too worried; July makes things more concerning I agree.

Re: S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

First contact with SPOT Satellite GPS message was on July 13, the last one on the 26th.

They were together with s/v Andiamo a 43` Swan in Cobbs Marine. They both took off on Monday the 13th but Andiamo turned back after the first day because of a developing tropical system

I quote from the owner of Andiamo : " The Maratonga crew was cautious and interested to learn from us any information about the weather that we might have had access to."
