Hi ESTARZINGER,

Maybe they didn't want to take a chance with Claudette

The closest major was tropical storm Claudette early-mid July, but it should have dissolved by the 26th.

Re: S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

I dont see anything on the net!?

I would contact as many news papers and tv news channels as possible with details of
the captain and crew and make this as personal as possible. If you are truly concerned. You should waste no time, The english cew who went missing a year or so ago on the same trip were all over the news and forced the govts to make extra effort.

As far as I understand it the SPOT was not reliable, they never are mid-ocean, therefore there is not really any last known position to work from.

The guys last year had PLBs; the family member that we have been in contact with doesn't know if these guys had a PLB or EPIRB.

A search would be impossible in my opinion. The only way is to get the word out there and hope for a sighting report.

I used SPOT to find tiny row boats off the California and Baja coasts last year who were participating in the Great Ocean Race and they were very reliable.

Wishing you the best in finding your friends and loved ones!

Spot is based on Globalstar who used, at least, to be very spotty much away from shore. Don't know about now.

Last year they worked really well all the way out to 500 miles offshore. Not sure past that distance.

Well folk on here and elsewhere have followed my Spot Track across the Atlantic, Med, Baltic, N Sea etc..
It has caused no end of entertainment for many at one time..
Nowadays its just.. 'Oh.. Boaties off to play again..

Lets hope the reason is as simple as.. We forgot to buy some extra AAA batteries..

Re: S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

My SPOT failed. The solder joint where the battery clip attaches to the board broke off on two of the batteries. The clips don't move so it's hard to tell why its broken. I eventually figured it out.

Maybe there is something wrong with a batch of SPOTS.

Still - they are a month overdue.

Re: S/V MARATONGA missing in Atlantic

Hi. I live in Portugal (South - Algarve). I'll inform the local coast Guard although they probably already know. Doesn't hurt anyway.

There are a lot of yachts rescued near azores all the time. If I remember correctly, last may, 6 yachts were rescued on the same day.

Not being a sailor, I wonder how come the alert is coming after almost two months? How long does it take to reach azores from the US anyway?

Probably stupid question but I have no clue about the usual time spans.

Tony

Yes, spot on. Now is the time to be out searching for them. It's pretty clear that the sooner searches are conducted the more success in finding survivers of any disaster occuring. Force the authorities hand and get them out looking.
