Russian Cargo Ship Adrift off Haida Gwaii

A Russian Cargo ship loaded with 100's of tons of bunker and diesel fuel is adrift off of Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) in stormy weather. The Canadian Coast Guard lifted off the captain who is injured and flew him to hospital. A CGG ship on site is having difficulty getting a line on board the stricken ship.

An American tug and a larger CGG ship from Prince Rupert are en-route but the wind has shifted and is pushing the ship towards shore.

Let's hope they can get a tow secured or engines restarted. Such an incredible coastline - a ship with that record running on that rugged coast..!?? 😡

I was under the impression that they had to stay much further off shore. But the government kept saying "nothing can go wrong"...

Yeah - let's hope it's not another Exon Valdez.. I was around Prince William Sound prior to and there's still oil in the gravel beaches even today. (Though this one's not carrying near as much)

This won't be the last incident if they build the Northern Gateway pipeline. Madness.

The mayor of Masset has just tweeted that the ship is now under tow at a slow speed away from the coastline. Hopefully that will hold until the tug reaches them around 1:00am PDT.

As Astrid would tell you, this is not the place to have an oil spill. Parts of this coast are pristine.

Looks like they've got a line on it now. Still, this isn't an Exxon Valdez situation. It's a cargo ship. Yes, they have fuel on board, and a grounding would be bad. But it's not an oil tanker, much less a supertanker.

The vlcc supertankers they are planning for the coast are going to be a nightmare. I've weathered many bad storms over the years in that area. Brutal, rugged, beautiful.

Yeah, I sure hope they get to it in time... the NW has been having strong winds this week and last night... from the South though down here north of Seattle... hope it wasnt a super strong westerly up there.... as mentioned this coast is pristine... It would be a terrible spill... wonder if they can drop the anchors if they get to close without power...?

"Acting Canadian Sub. Lt. Ron MacDougall said the Simushir is carrying "a range of hydrocarbons, mining materials and other related chemicals," which includes 400 tons of bunker oil and 50 tons of diesel."
It does have some containers on it also, but not many. I guess mining materials also... yeah... I see they have it in tow under "challenging conditions". Not a place you want to be about now through march.....

Re: Russian Cargo Ship Adrift off Haida Gwaii

how many engines would a boat this size have? hard to believe they could all die at once. they should all have isolated electrical and fuel systems.
