Restricted Medications

I sleep with prescription medicine, and also plan to carry pain medication for possible emergency use on our live aboard travels. Since we donít yet know where we will be sailing apart from starting in the Bahamas, are there any generic guidelines/recommendations? For example, I understand that legallly it is a requirement to carry a medical note or prescription for the restricted medications, but - perish the thought - should we be boarded and searched, is it better to have them innocuously disguised? Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Restricted Medications

If you have them in the bottle that has the prescription on them with your name on it, Iím sure you will be OK.
Disguising them looks too much like smuggling to me, and likely them.

Only place I have travelled that had me concerned was Indonesia. I flew though and didnít arrive by boat, but based on the warning signs all over the airport I was actually concerned about the unmarked vitamins I had in my luggage.
If the warnings can be believed and I assume they can, they kill drug smugglers

In Indonesia you are going to get a trial and appeals etc. However I would not rely on this process in the Philippines at the moment.

Re: Restricted Medications

We have never really been searched by customs in any country we have been to. Usually just a cursory look and questions about interesting gear. I have learned to hide the slingshot or they will use up my marbles, leaving me undefended against red footed boobies. We just keep our medications together in a cabinet, including leftover oxycodone, and don't worry about it. As long as your name is on the bottle you should be OK.

One may hope that, once you start cruising, you won't need pharmaceuticals to sleep.

Re: Restricted Medications

I was waiting for my bag after an interstate flight when this beautiful little beagle dog cam along and sat down in front of a woman in front of me and looked at her with it's lovable little eyes. Charming little creature. Then a bloke in a uniform came along and asked the lady was she carrying any fruit as the dog had indicated so. It was a packet of fruit jubes in her handbag which the dog had detected the scent of and he was a quarantine official.

Iv'e been very diligent about declaring stuff ever since and if in doubt leave the question on the entry documents unanswered and bring the doubtful items to their attention. If you get the letter from your doctor be sure you purchase meds with the same brand name and contents description some of them folks have a tenuous grasp of English.
