Once I thought I found a rat in my bunk. Had finished the 8-midnight watch and was sound asleep when the mate called me on deck
. He had heard a loud clang and thought we should investigate. Checked the engine
room, bilges and all ok. Got lights and checked around the deck
, all the rigging
, still found nothing wrong. So i sat up for a while, nothing happening so went below and climbed back in the bunk. Was just about back to sleep, rolled over and my hand landed on something furry and wet. RAT!!!! Slammed it away with my hand as I rocketed up out of the cabin
When my panic subsided a bit I got a light and shinned it in the cabin
and there, sitting on my bunk looking quite dazed was a seagull. Apparently flying along in the dark he hit the mast
, making the metallic clang, which knocked him down onto the deck and he ended up below on my bunk to recuperate.
Removed him from my bunk and set him on the aft deck as a more appropriate location for a seagull. A couple of hours later he hopped up on the rail and flew off into the dark.
