Completely agree..too many kids these days are micro-managed to the point they can't take a pee without asking. I had my 5 and 9 year olds on board for two years...of course you have to keep an eye on them but kids take to sailing a lot easier than adults. I sat drinking a beer in the shade most times while my 5 year old ran the boat. If the kid has the helm, he has the authority. We learned to swim by being dropped into the ocean. Learn real quick.

Always check on them on a regular basis. Kid proofing your boat is a good option. Adding guardrail netting keep the kids from falling overboard. It is easily available from marine suppliers and catalogs. Installing waterproof and a 12 volt LED courtesy lights at strategic spots around the boat is another good option. If you are using fuel then it is important if you get one or more carbon monoxide detectors. Models that have both audio and visual signals would be preferable.
