PFD CO2 cartridge replacement

At the start of each sailing season I manually inflate all the PFDs on my boat. This year, for the first time, one leaked and I have replaced it.



But now I'm wondering if there is a way to check the CO2 cartridges and/or should I simply be replacing them every so often? If replacement is recommended, how often should I do that?


Please note that on the cartridges it gives a "minimum weight". Do you think it sufficient to weigh each cartridge on an accurate scale and if greater then that it is okay?

It's generally recommended to replace them every 5 years unless you see corrosion or the indicator shows it's in the red. Since they need to be emptied to throw away, I like to jump in with full foulies and feel the full effects of a PFD deploying while in the water. It's an eye-opener.

Weighing them is usually a pretty good indicator if any gas has escaped. If the bottle has any corrosion I would chuck it because it is abrasive and I would worry about it damaging the bladder of the lifejacket.

Yes, providing there is no corrosion as other posters have mentioned.
