Re: OMG I Am Being Eaten Alive!

Regarding Vegemite/Marmite it is the extra Vitamin B intake that may help. Vitamin B capsules would do the same (our bodies don't store Vit B, so it needs to be consumed daily). This is only anecdotal, the thoery has not been well tested.

BTW, if you haven't been born and bred on Vegemite you may find you prefer being bitten to consuming it LOL.

Re: OMG I Am Being Eaten Alive!

FWIW, in my years in the African jungle I used Bushman, an 80% DEET product from Australia. Yes, it did damage my watch, cell phone, and any other product I touched but it kept me malaria free for 7 years.

My liver seems to be fine, BTW.

I have heard that! I may try it someday (you know "when in Rome" and all that) but I don't see it in my near future.

A thin cotton salwa (long trousers, spilt sided sleeveless dress over the top) was the only tolerable thing when humidity was close to 100%. I was more worried about all the unexploded landmines and rats and risk of typhoid and cholera and DEET poisoning at the time LOL and as I was taking antimalarials and still eating Vegemite, I stopped worrying about mosquitoes . Don't think I had one bite, so maybe the Vegemite worked .

Interesting.

Autan contains an active called Icaridin* (the trade name of the patented chemical KBR 3023). In tests under temperate and tropical conditions against important malarial and other disease carriers, it demonstrated excellent repellent qualities comparable with, and often superior to, those of standard DEET.

*Icaridin also known around the world as KBR or Bayrepel (trademark of Bayer AG)

Insects are attracted to brightly coloured, patterned or dark clothing.
Try wearing light colours such as pastels, white or khaki.

I agree Marmite is revolting, Aussie Vegemite is INFINITELY superior, but you do need to be raised on it to appreciate it. My first rusk as a four month old was coated in it (following medical advice). If nothing else it sure makes Aussies tough .

Re: OMG I Am Being Eaten Alive!

Now lets get the facts right shall weMARMITE is not a beef extract...

It is a YEAST extract. It contains=niacin, thiamin, celery, riboflavin, folic acid and vitamin B12.

The mosquito does NOT like the taste nor the smell of Marmite.

Buy a small jar and spread it thinly on a round of bread or toast or even a cracker.

By the way us brits love you yanks and aussies.

We Aussies love you Brits too. We only poke fun at those we love
By the way, you forgot to mention that the extract is from brewer's yeast. It was first made from the discarded dregs scraped from the inside of beer barrels. This explains our fondness for beer as well .

I use permethrin soak on my clothes and it works amazingly well without having to use deet. I buy the 10% mix and dilute to 1% then soak.

There are a few videos on YouTube on how to do it.
