Ocean Rodeo Drysuits

This was recommended to me by some racers I know in Cowes:

This looks seriously better than normal marine drysuits. Not a "gumbo suit" at all; but something you could wear days on end on a cold long high latitude passage. I especially like the fact that you can take off the watertight neck when you don't need it.

But the cost!! Not since the long gone days when I used to wear Armani suits, did I ever spent this kind of money on any kind of garment. With the liner, about £1600 or more than $2000! How much dyneema rope I could buy for that kind of money!

Anyone have any experience with this? Worth the eye-watering cost?

I have been looking at them, and agree with you the Ocean Rodeo brand suits are nice but are very expensive, whether overpriced is a matter of opinion. Just as one can buy a very nice Goretex outdoor garment for competitive price or spend 3X for a particular brand (Arcteryx).

The removable cowl is a notable feature, but some suits now have newer type necks that may not be as uncomfortable as past suits.. in other words, I don't think that feature is essential for my needs.

I like what i see in alternatives by Crewsaver, and other brands.
I don't have a pressing need at this time, but want one for future cold water sailing. Last year I was sailing around icebergs near Newfoundland, with water temp 42 degrees Fahrenheit, so it has been on my mind for future.

Your trip to Greenland would be a good need, or desirable.

Here is what is on my wish list now. Crewsaver drysuit. Comes with fleece undergarment. One reviewer wrote:

That sure looks like fun. Wow. I wonder if it's too late in life to take up kite surfing.


I'm going to suck it up and shell out this money, although there are a lot of competing uses for the expenditure. As far as I can tell from my reading, the Soul is the older and lighter duty purely for kite surfing suit; the Ignite is more heavy duty and for dinghy sailing; the Boss is what I want -- its the professional version of the Ignite, for SAR workers and boat crews.

There are other choices, but these seem to be the bee's knees.

The Ocean Rodeo is a great suit. Also look at the Neil Pryde. I prefer the neoprene neck gasket.

The only differences between the Ignite and the Boss Ocean Rodeo drysuit is the color and two leg cargo pockets. The Ingnite is a heavy duty garmet that’s reinforced the same as the Boss. Not everyone wants to look like a SAR worker.

Are you sure about that?

If it's true, then the price difference of the Boss is not worth it, even if I would like to have the cargo pockets, and don't mind looking like a SAR worker . The Ignite can be had for about a grand, which is much less painful.

We purchased the Ignite based on the fact that if it’s built well enough for a commercial fishermans needs like the fellow below, it would be good enough for us.

That's not what they told me when I called the dealer. The Boss is completely different, with an inflatable buoyancy bladder, completely different neck seals, and a lot of other differences, which is why it costs $1700 vs. $1100. The Ignite is not really a survival suit; the Boss is. Was strongly recommended for the Arctic.

Now to go shopping.

I've had an Ocean Rodeo Ignite for about 5 years. I once spent 6 hours in 32F water in it for an article in Good Old Boat Magazine.

I'm not going to argue the brand or model; there are lots of good ones out there.

Neck seal comfort is about proper trimming; they are ALWAYS too tight when you buy them and are intended to be trimmed. Same with the wrists. I think you will find that most of the Volvo guys are using latex neck seals. Sailors trim them looser than divers. I can forget mine is there after a while and my neck doesn't get irritated. I find them ore comfortable than neoprene, unless the neoprene is too loose to seal.



I use it for:

• Kayaking
• Deck wear when it is cold and nasty
• In-water boat maintanance when it's cold

And there are also contingency uses. Ever wrap a line around the rudder or prop? Bend a rudder on a submerged object? Need to inspect to external damage or fix something on the drive? All of these have happened to me in cold water. With a drysuit they are no big deal.

And what do you put on your feet, when you go intentionally into the water? My sea boots will fill with water, so no good.

It was in GOB last year and is not on-line.

I wear wet suit boots. The dry suit has attached feet that make it a little too big for my regular deck shoes. So either deck shoes one size larger or some type of neoprene deck shoes, like dinghy sailors wear. Not sea boots. (no need to change shoes if you are going in the water, really.)

OK. So if we can't read your article, could you at least give us the Cliff Notes? Which of the drysuits did you like, and why?
