OBGYN recommendations in La Paz, Mexico
I'm currently 5 months pregnant and will be approximately 7 months pregnant by the time we get to La Paz in a few months (leaving from San Diego.) We'll be heading to Puerto Vallarta to have the baby and have an OBGYN already there but want to stop in La Paz for prenatal care/check-in, etc.
I do speak some Spanish, so no worries if the doc doesn't speak English.

Re: OBGYN recommendations in La Paz, Mexico
G'Day Red,
It has been too long since we were in La Paz to offer any specific advice, but you might contact IAMAT (Internation Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers). They will have exactly the info you need.
IAMAT - Travel Health, Vaccinations, Doctor Directory, Travel Medicine
www.iamat.org/
A very worthwhile group for yotties to know about.
Cheers,
Jim

Re: OBGYN recommendations in La Paz, Mexico
I've spent a lot of time in La Paz, but have never needed to consult with an obstetrician.
One thing to note is that Mexican physicians will almost all speak excellent English, and that most will still make house calls (boat calls?) at a reasonable rate.
The good place to get a referral for an OB-GYN might be Club Cruceros de La Paz, which can be contacted here: Club Cruceros de La Paz - Home
(I think it still only costs $10 per year to join the club, if you're interested.)

Re: OBGYN recommendations in La Paz, Mexico
You may find a physician, who may recommend you an Ob/Gyn doctor, at a nearby commercial airport. Pilots must undergo physicals, on a regular basis, to maintain their flying credentials; it is a worldwide regulation. Airports administrators know local physicians and their specialties. Contact any local airport administrator for a physician referral/hospital referral.
In Ob/Gyn...if the baby is "kicking" and there is "no bleeding/spotting", it is "assumed" that everything is OK. If there's "no kicking" and/or there's bleeding/spotting, get emergency care as soon as possible; these are signs of a "potential miscarriage". If you e-mail me a specific question, that needs to be answered by an Ob/Gyn doc, I will refer it to someone who is a Board Certified Ob/Gyn. Good luck on your pregnancy! Let us know how it turned out.

Re: OBGYN recommendations in La Paz, Mexico
Hey Charlotte,
My ex-wife is an OB/GYN. I have picked up a lot of info from her over the years and feel confidant I can handle any of your concerns. I am here for you.

I would contact Club Crucero in La Paz online. They can probably recommend someone in the area.

Red
The other resource for Mexico and Central America is the Yahoo Group, Southbound_Group
They have over 1200 members cruising Pacific Mexico and Central America. We found them very valuable when we were cruising that side of the world.
