No Somali Pirate Attacks Since May 2012, Safe Now?

I read that there have been no ships taken hostage since may of 2012. I haven't heard of any yachts being taken either...is it safe now?

I don't believe in firearms on board, but this is one area I might make an exception.

I bet there is a WORLD of difference between shooting down at pirates from the deck of a freighter when they are trying to board you and shooting it out with them at sea level.

Just as an aside, did you see this in today's news? Can't believe he fell for it.

BBC News - Somali pirate leader 'Big Mouth' arrested in Belgium

14 October 2013 Last updated at 15:34 ET Somali pirate leader 'Big Mouth' arrested in Belgium

Mohammed Abdi Hassan talked about piracy in an interview in Mogadishu in April

A man alleged to be one of Somalia's most influential pirate leaders has been arrested in Belgium.

Mohammed Abdi Hassan, also known as Afweyneh or Big Mouth, was detained at Brussels international airport on Saturday after a sting operation.
Undercover agents had persuaded the Somali and an associate that they wanted to make a documentary about their pirate exploits.
Mr Abdi Hassan now faces criminal charges, including hijacking.
Prosecutors believe that the Somali was behind the seizure of a Belgian ship in 2009, reports the BBC's Chris Morris in Brussels.
Mr Abdi Hassan is also charged with kidnapping the ship's crew and with belonging to a criminal organisation.
Successful pirate attacks off Somalia have decreased in the last two years
'Notorious' In January, Mohammed Abdi Hassan was reported to have said that he had renounced crime after eight years in the piracy business.
However, Belgian authorities say he made millions from his illegal activities, and will be held responsible.
Belgian vessels have in the past taken part in international missions against piracy on the high seas off Somalia.
In a UN report leaked last year, it was alleged that Afweyneh was "one of the most notorious and influential leaders of the Hobyo-Harardhere Piracy Network".

The bad guys have been hit hard in this part of the world for the past 2 yrs ...Kenya and Uganda have been giving them hell on earth ..they have a "new man" at the head of the Gov. that seems to have a direction in mind for the country ,other than the past...Historic opportunity to defeat the bad guys..some say the Mall incident(Kenya) was the last ditch effort of such "bad Players" being exterminated ..."lawlessness will be brought under control very soon".... good luck

Might want to re-consider that

Somalia piracy is back, says UK intel firm
UK firm Dryad Maritime Intelligence has warned that the attack of two vessels in the space of four days indicates that maritime piracy has returned to East African waters. Last Friday, 296,919dwt Hong Kong-flagged crude carrier MV Island Splendor came under attack 230nm off the Somali coast, when pirates in two skiffs opened fire on onboard private maritime security personnel.
According to Dryad, the attack, which represented the first on a large merchant vessel since April, was followed by a second, 270 nautical miles further East, four days later. Dryad has since concluded that the two attacks were undertaken by the same pirate gang or “Pirate Action Group” (PAG).
“Despite the pressure applied by coalition forces and the assessed depletion of pirate resources, there was a likelihood that we would see a break out of a PAG into the sea lanes and that the hijack and ransom of a single large merchant vessel would be all it would take to feed the infrastructure of the Somali pirate criminal enterprise,” said Ian Millen, intelligence director at Dryad. “Following Monday’s report, it would appear that the attack on two vessels in the space of four days confirms that the Somali pirate business model is not yet broken.”
Millen indicated that numerous reports of pirate activity in the Gulf of Aden during the Southwest Monsoon were “not considered these to be pirate related”.
“We do, however, continue to encourage all vessels and their embarked security teams to report their concerns, whilst encouraging them to understand normal patterns of behaviour to avoid tragic consequences for themselves or for the many innocent seafarers they encounter. The incident with Island Splendor last Friday is a classic example of where vigilance and a professional response paid dividends in preventing what could have been the first real pirate success of 2013.” Source : seatrade-global.com
