I practiced for 35 years in small town Canada. During that time we had many ‘refugees’ flooding in via church groups from Central America. And, on a daily basis I saw former eastern European patients. Almost without exception the quality was below acceptable N. American standards.
There were poor quality dentists in my town. There were high quality dentists there, too.
Without doubt the highest quality dentistry came from Germany, Scandinavian and countries USA/Canada. Unfortunately, no patient knows what goes on during their dental work or how to interpret the actual result. If they like the price, in many cases they are happy, regardless of the ‘quality’.
I will complete my revolution of the globe in a few months (cowering here in Buenos Aires waiting to go south). When I hit Chile, it’s done.
I have had dental procedures (minor) done in Marshall Islands, Philippines and Thailand. Seemingly up to good standard and I am not afraid to seek care anywhere in the world. The key, as others have mentioned, is to get a referral from a trusted friend. This works in N. America and around the world. If you are headed for complete reconstruction-implant wise-you must seek the services of a board-certified prosthodontist, either in Canada, Germany or USA. Too much at stake, never mind money.
Free advice is what it’s worth.

Hi Peter...thanx for chiming in. I am a Canuck myself and after a bike wreck in 1975, I had major work done and was very happy with it. Almost 40 years later the bridge is failing and a few other problems. I had one implant done in Ca. in 1997. Again, excellent work and it's hanging in nicely. I was quoted here at another Dentist in Ca. $5K for 3 more implants and an additional $3K for a snap in over-denture. Tha't $8K I don't have. So the recommendation by friends for a dentist in P.V., Mx. is a good one, if he can 1/2 that. We'll see what happens.

Keep in mind however that there are multiple levels to the healthcare systems in Central America. Those "refugees" you saw were not likely getting their services at the upper levels of the system.

If you go to some back alley "dentist", as a few here have, then of course you are probably going to get shotty work. However, if you stick with the upper end of the spectrum and use recommend Docs/Clinics then the quality is on par any developed country. And, the cost is still substantially lower, but not due to poor quality work.

The dental clinic I use in Guatemala is first class all the way...latest gear, super sanitary, very professional, USA & European trained docs. Easily on par or better than any USA dental office I have been in. I've never waited more than 10 minutes for my appointment (why can't USA docs keep a schedule?)....and they apologized profusely for that.

And, patient care is really part of the process here, the docs and their staff have not been beaten into numbness by a broken system....they genuinely care about their patients. I've had some great experiences here with Docs going out of their way to make sure I was cared for properly (and I know many others with similar experiences)...totally different than my experiences in the USA.

If you want to go slumming and looking for the absolute cheapest price then yes you are taking a risk...not worth it.

Re: Need Good Dentist in ...?

Thank you, all! I appreciate your help so much. I am now in Panama City, Panama, and tomorrow I get to have most of my remaining teeth removed. The dentist, whom I like very much, asked me if I was afraid of dentists.

I said, "Doc, I have six teeth left in my mouth, what do you think?"

Anyway, can't wait for tomorrow

Ty

Ha Ha Ha. I just got back to my hotel from the dentist. Had the cab stop twice. Pain pills and Tequila. Don't feel great, but nothing is ever as bad as it's made out to be.

Re: Need Good Dentist in ...?

My colleague had done Implanting from Dental Implants Las Vegas and he told me that they have done it very easily and they offered him very budgeted price for him.
