Most Important Safety Equipment
Through my years of sailing I've needed a lot of safety equipment that I never thought I'd need.
What are your most important pieces of safety equipment? (and be sure to list the ones that we may not have thought of!)
1. cork for through-hull
2. Backup GPS/Chartplotter (Navionics on my iPad and iPhone)
3. Manual bilge pump
4. 3 extra powered bilge pumps
5. Fire extinguisher
And of course the usual things like life jackets, life raft, EPIRB.

Re: Most Important Safety Equipment
bolt cutters yes, but also a good, ready, non rusty, hack saw, because sometimes you can't brace the bolt cutters well.
also: stuff for serious wounds and injuries

What others said.... but also:
My wife. (I'm old, she's young; She's got brains, I've got none.)
Spare Stay Sail. (Undoubtedly the greatest invention since the mast.)
Extra cordage/lines & a bolt of Sunbrella. ('Cause, you know... make/hoist a sail.)
Sail repair kit. (W/lots of needles.)
Spare parts & tools. And 3M 4000.
Two cans of beer (for "Anchor Down" situation).

Re: Most Important Safety Equipment
A good tool kit and knowledge to use it. Plus a useful array of spare parts and bits & pieces.
Sent from my NEXUS 5 whilst sitting in my armchair tied to the dock.

Re: Most Important Safety Equipment
Couple more ideas. 1) Actually practice man overboard retrieval with just two of you on the boat. 2 ) Quote from Director of the local marine safety organization. "The fatalities in the US aren't wearing life jackets. Our fatalities aren't wearing the jackets properly"

Re: Most Important Safety Equipment
We sail a 43' LOA boat...and found conflicting advice on the need for a bell. Is a bell required on a boat our size?
