Re: MOB pole getting "furry"

Sand fine, then paint. Dead simple. Resin is all wrong for UV.

Yes, aluminum paint blocks UV best. Special products are made for fabric airplanes and are a standard part of a very formalized FAA approved process. But any topsides paint will be fine for this.

I've painted over fuzzed FRP many times. This is just and MOB pole.

Re: MOB pole getting "furry"

I had the same problem 18 years ago. I painted it with polyurethane varnish and haven't had any trouble since.

I put on a thin coat, sanded and then added two more coats. Poly is flexible, clearand it has held up nicely. I never have had to redo it.

Same problem. Left fur on and painted with Rustoleum Gloss white. Just enough roughness left to give you a grip when the pole was wet. Been on over five years, gloss gone, but no visible cracks or flicking.

Re: MOB pole getting "furry"

The same thing happened to my fiberglass whip antenna for my LORAN years ago (yes, been around awhile) . The first thing to do is handle it with rubber gloves and be careful to not rub against it; that fuzz consists of fine glass fibers which easily, and painfully, embed in the skin. Sanding it at this stage will just raise more fibers: first seal it with a coat of whatever you are going to use and then sand before overcoating. I used marine enamel paint, which held up longer than LORAN did

Re: MOB pole getting "furry"

Ditto on the “no sanding the fur” (at least before sealing) trend of the last couple of posts.
Any unnecessary sanding of glass fibers gives me the heebie - jeebies.
Epoxy with uv-stabilizer, good enamel paint should work well.
Me - I don’t want gloss finishes on some stuff. I want a good, strong grip
at times.

Any suggestions on how to restore it? A few thin coats of some kind of UV stable coating like polyester resin or shellac?

I belong to a sailing club with 20 sailboats and many of the medium and larger boats have MOB poles. I've had several go 'fuzzy' and solved the issue with a light sanding and a few coats of topside paint. I happened to have white available, but it's been over 5 years since the painting of the first and it's still not gotten fuzzy.
