Quite right. Much over a real 30 knots and you start having to change your plans and start singing to the weathers tune.

Despite some of the contributors comments on here at about hi winds at 50 knots nobody is really sailing anymore. Certainly at 70 knots your options are going to severely limited and as for 100 knots plus well that's well beyond time for survival tactics. I've never seen over 70 at sea (I've seen an official 103k at anchor once) it and hope that remains the case.

Fair winds I say

Re: Merged Thread: New Zealand Yacht with One Deceased and Another Missing

^^

help me catch up on what we actually know about the incident:

(1) do we know what the wind actually was, and if there was at least a decent 24 hour forecast/prediction of it? The gribs sort of made it look like a gale (say 40kts sustained) - was that it or did a bomb develop? What did McDavitt's weathergram say the day before?

(2) sequence of events? Boom breaks - takes out backstay, which takes out mast - in all that someone hit and killed and someone overboard? Is that the best info now?

I think all we know at this time is that the winds were around 40k sustained and there was a rig failure. We don't really know how the rest happend other than the chap that was killed was seriously hurt by the rig and then died through the night. We don't know if the other chap went over at the same time or at a different time. The following seems to be the most recent on it.

Evans, the first pic of the boat showed the mast still up. The later pic of Platino, next to the container ship, the mast is no longer visible. When that loss occurred is not, afaik, known to the forum.

Well, we DO know that some folks jumped on a freighter, abandoned an expensive yacht, and left (supposedly) a dead guy on said yacht. That's about it.

That, and some vague statements here about something vague.

If that's you having a sense of humour, I find it rather crass

No sense of humor. That's all we know. Cut and dry. Crass? Your opinion.

I have a written message from a skipper (friend and CF member) who believes his boat was the closest boat (45NM to the West) at the time of the Mayday and he says that peak wind speed in his boat was 33 knots. He did not say if true or apparent though.

Moreover, why are the people smiling in the Southern Lily rescue photo? Odd, don't you think? I wouldn't be smiling if I abandoned a yacht leaving a dead guy (or two) behind. But, that's just me.

ok, thanks, that is generally consistent with the weather maps I saw - around gale force.

Interesting - ok, I see it in the OP - Something bad happened to both the jib and main. With the rig still looking mostly intact. I presume this was taken by NZ SAR, and so the mayday and incident have already happened.

That is a bit harder to understand than the sequence I had suggested above.

Does look like there were probably flailing sheets - which in that size boat can kill you especially if they hit you in the head. Boom looks quite high - probably have to be working on it to be hit by it.

Can I remind you that in 1998 (S2H) six very experienced sailors and five very well equipped boats were lost in winds reaching 60 knotts. Waves were reported to be as high as ever seen in the race.

Something about your experience doesn't add up.
You mean his 70 years of experience?

Missing man identified.

Why you would not be wearing a life vest in those conditions is beyond me.

Man missing overboard from Platino is Stephen Forno | Stuff.co.nz
