If that is so it may be that the same tug has been 'contracted' by either the underwriters or the owners to try and salvage the yacht which I imagine has quite a high insured value.

There are a couple of other things at play here which I don't think it would be right or proper for me to mention. They would, however, mean that people may be going the extra mile on this one at various levels.
Yes, some other "things" came to our minds about this situation. May take some time for it all to be sorted out. Does not quite pass the "duck" test. But maybe we are just being quackers.

Platino yacht update | New Zealand Police

Weather dependent, we could reach Platino by Saturday and have the yacht and body of the person on board back in New Zealand early next week,” says Inspector Graham.

You , sir, do not have the vaguest idea of what I am refering to.

Today's New Zealand Herald article regarding the incident:

Cheers.

A potential >$1 million salvage fee is a strong incentive to take some risk and spend a few days at sea.

There are some pretty large seagoing tugs capable of easily transiting from San Francisco to Hawaii while towing an aircraft carrier.

Potential >$1 million salvage doesn't say I think the thing might be worth just $2 million...

It actually says that I think it may be worth more than $2 million (based mostly on it having been worth spending more than $1 million in refit just months before)

I was just speculating on an incentive for trying to save the hull, due to someone asking why they might try to tow it in, despite hazardous weather.

Hopefully anyone trying would be smart enough to cut it loose rather than let it cause the tug to be in peril.

Happy to have successfully rescued 3 people in challenging weather conditions...

Better outcome than some possibilities.

Actually, the best outcome possible from his efforts based on when he got involved in the incident. No added casualties.

Its a matter of perspective. Those 3 survivors are probably happy to be off the boat that is drifting, awaiting salvage attempts. Doesn't mean they aren't sad at the lost lives.

The tug boat is under control by NZ Police and is carrying an Officer. NZ Police press release stated: A body floating aboard the damaged yacht Platino could be back on land early next week.
A maritime police officer left Whangarei on Tuesday night aboard a tug boat, tasked with retrieving the yacht and the body of crew member Nick Saull, which is still on board.
Depending on weather conditions, the tug could reach Platino as early as Saturday and return to New Zealand with the yacht a few days later.

I'm presuming the above is a joke, but then if it isn't, why have a sail boat if you're not comfortable in wind?
(I've always spelled (or spelt, never sure?) knots with a single t.)

Well, no, I wasn't joking. I don't feel the need to big note my abilities though either. I simply have not had a lot of experience in heavy wind. It's a case that my boat is quite capable, but I'm not. So, I choose to go out in winds aimed at 10 to 25 knotts.

Something else I might add. I see my future as a cruiser, not racing and travelling comfortable. My idea of fun is sipping wine on deck in sunshine, not taking water over a tossing vessel.

I am kind of with you RC. Id as sooner as not sail in a real 30+ knots offshore if I could. It just isn't that much fun.

Good on you for not getting all macho about it.

Always waited for good weather windows.

Makes little difference on passages over 5 days - forecasts not accurate for longer than that. You get what you get, good or bad. And in the Hiscock days they did not have much beyond about 48 hour decent forecasts.

Really you are either an extremely careless writer or just dont have a clue. You have been parroting every offshore text book cliche without seeming to understand them at all
