We first went to St. Lucia in 1987 and last in 2007. I have never felt safe there...too many angry people. We avoid it and St. Vincent, as well...same reason.

We visited St. Lucia in 2002. We rented a car and went to the botanical gardens where we were approached by many local "tour guides". We were cautious at first but did hire Charles to show us all the best spots, which he did. He even took us to his cousin's restaurant under the Pitons to have lunch. We did feel much safer with him guiding us.

We stayed at a resort that had a public beach and shared it with the locals. There was always a security presence from the hotel though.

Those attackers are going to be much worse off once the cruise ships stop visiting and the tourist dollars dry up. You can only grow so many bananas.

I believe there are more islands to be avoided in the east Caribbean but these two are most definitely in that group. I have too little experience with the other candidates, but too much with these two...

About angry people living there: we noticed that English speaking nations are often angry while this does not show so much with other Caribbean nations like those that speak Spanish. Venezuela might be the exception to that but we have spend time there and I believe it is the socialist government rhetoric that is responsible for that, not the people as much.
I believe that "hope" might well be the factor in this being angry or not. Latin America has that glow of hope and prosperity and some are in the world's top growing economies, while countries like St Lucia really have a bleak future outlook. Even if they would have oil off-shore, Venezuela would muscle it away from them. This leaves just the white tourist who often gets the blame for it all.

Are the Europeans to blame? I believe the Carib Indians were pretty good at killing the Arawaks before the Europeans showed up.

Never a justification, but with the huge with the huge differences in wealth and living standards around the world the most surprising thing about events like this isn't that they happen, but that they don't happen much, much more often.

Most of the cruise ship/resort money is going somewhere other than St. Lucia.

So we probably shouldn't break our arms patting ourselves on the back for how lucky they are that cruise ships stop there.

Yea, I know... No one can carry weapons on a cruise ship. My point is that the "robbers" obviously knew that.

Arms or not, the name for someone who has no ability to fight back is "victim". Might have some applicability to this forum?

The thing is that the locals have no respect for the tourists. When I watch cruise ships emptying onto the shores of these islands, it is not hard to understand this.

I belive the killing your enemy stuff started after the europeans got here ..Most indeginious peoples didnt do a lot of killing ,the height of victory in battle for "indians" was to simply touch the chief of the opposing tribe..Not saying that they didnt do it ,it just wasnt as commen as the "propaganda "would have us believe..It served the white man well to have the indians fight and kill each other,the old divide and conquer...
