Liferaft Theft?

My wife and I are getting ready to cruise this year in the Caribbean and are struggling with discissioins on a liferaft. Just wondering if theft is a big concern with a liferaft in a container mounted on deck or rails.

As I am sure you will all agree, a liferaft is a very expensive purchase. Just wondering what others in the forum thought on this subject. Trying to decide on hard case or valise.

I have valise life raft that has never been deployed and will need a inspection. If you're interested I could probably make a good deal for you on it.

What make/model/year manufactured/year of last inspection? I may be interested if OP is not. PM welcome.

I've never heard of one getting stolen. Would be nearly a zero resale market and they're of almost no use to anyone. I'm sure one has been stolen somewhere in the world.

Sure Paul, not to sound elusive but I just thought of it when the OP posted. Give me a few days because I'm not in town. But I bought it new about four years ago and it has sat in my shop unused since. It will need an inspection, which I will have done so I know what condition it is in first so no one wastes their time.

Liable to be a bit expensive. It sounds like it is old enough that the inflation cylinder will have to be hydrostatically tested. I had a 6 person Givens offshore that needed that done and the inspection came to somewhere around $700 total. You might want to get an estimate.

I would imagine each liferaft has its own unique serial number that is recorded by the busineses that recertify them. It would not be hard to report one as stolen to these businesses. But then, so many thieves are so stupid that they would not know this and steal one anyway.

My switlick valise was stolen by Offshore Repair and Repack now out of business. I sent it to them for a repack and the couldn't find and and refused to pay me for it. I call that stealing. Took em to court... won and they never paid... filed for bankruptcy. Paul Siege... beware.

ahh, but no one boarded your boat in pair a dice to remove it involuntarily while you slept..they were brazen and stole it where there IS a market for them.

that's true.... but I did have my running rigging and a solid vang stolen one year when I was in in-water winter storage.

If ya lift em up and lock em with a GOOD lock they very seldom get stolden! at least thats what Ive seen!
