otherwise gortex socks with an inner wicking liner..not all water comes from outside.

In my opening post I mentioned bread bags, since they were traditional when I was a kid. Not everyone had boots, but all the kids wanted to play in the snow (this was before the internet and video games... thank goodness).

More than once I have been surprised by cold rain, either cycling or sailing. and did not have the right gear with me. All kidding aside, thin plastic grocery bags can be lifesavers. Not sayin' it's the best answer, just a good trick to remember.


I think my "perfect" answer would be a wet suit style boot that was truly optimized as a cold weather deck shoe. Still looking....

We like our Chota Mukluks for sea kayaking. They make two styles. We like the ones with a bit of lateral support at the ankles. Very flexible and grippy. They work great on deck as well. [We also do short hikes on land when we get out of the kayaks. Great for fording shallow glacial streams too...]

It gets expensive trying everything over the years. We usually have to order without having the benefit of seeing/trying on first... Lots of trial and expensive errors...

Neoprene is insulating once wet. They are grippy and flexible, yet tough. I prefer feeling the deck under foot, and I find boots to be clunky and awkward onboard.

This one seems to get good reviews also. What I have are lighter duty, and though I like them, my feet get a little tired from lack of support. Thicker neoprene would be nice too.


Well, perhaps I'm on the right track. In the end, it often comes down to fit.
