Jumping on to a Dinghy
Has anybody jumped on to a dinghy and screwed up their back?
I jumped about six feet from my boat to my dinghy and spent about a month with a wonderful pain in my lower back. I took a pile of pills and now it is fine.
Any recommendations?
Caracas on shore for the momento.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
I don't jump anywhere, anymore! My back's already screwed up, probably form jumping out of the old step van I had to drive around before I retired.

Welcome to "late middle age". The body gets damaged easier and takes longer to heal. Remember ibuprofen is your friend!

So true.
My lower and upper back, shoulders, neck, hips, knees, and probably more have been messed up for a while. I can't lift my right leg without pain in my hip. At some point, you just have to know what your (new) limits are of what you can or can't do. I'm only 35 but my body makes me feel older.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
I was always taught there should be no jumping- might miss!! Always step- maybe a big step but it's safer. Or figure another way to get on.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
A number of people have been killed getting into the dinghy.
In fact, dinghy deaths are probably the biggest cause of cruiser deaths apart from road accidents and medical.
Drunksd getting into the dingyy and slipping or tripping either go into the water and drow, or hit their heads on the dock and drown.
I crawl into and out of my dink as do my guests.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
Perhaps this is so obvious as to be unnecessary, but may I humbly suggest using a boarding ladder to enter/exit your dinghy? That's what most cruisers do...
You won't be so likely to hurt yourself, and your dinghy will be happier too.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
It's sort of like touching a hot stove. You may not want to do it again unless you like the back pain pills.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
Like everyone else here, I've had a few back injuries in my past. It's even hard for me to raise my leg when peeing on a tree .
At a dock, slipping into a dinghy is one thing but I a rough anchorage, deboarding into a bucking tender is a completely different animal. You gotta be careful.

Re: Jumping on to a dinghy
Under 25, sure no problem.
25 -35, uh, be careful
35-45, good luck.
over 45, hope you have good medical insurance.
over 55, why are you trying to kill yourself? Life is good. You have a boat.

I recommend targeted deep slow stretching and trigger point therapy.
