Re: I'm Suffering My Most Common Boating Injury Again

I realized I had only right gloves left. The left gloves had all been pretty badly mangled and ruined.

I go through right hand gloves 3 times as fast as left hand
gloves, so I turn some left hand gloves inside out and make
them righties. They work fine if I trim the lining.

Re: I'm Suffering My Most Common Boating Injury Again

My buddy and me are losing hair on the
top of our heads. It only takes a slight
bump against an edge to put a wicked cut up
there. It happens even through a canvas
hat. Just happened to him today. I couldn't
believe how slight the bump was compared to how
bad the cut was.

My nemesis is the companion-way ladder. To gain access to the engine compartment it is swung up and latched. Even though I know well that it is up, it always seems to find the back of my head. BTW, not just once, but when I finish the expletives, it gets me again!

As for splinters, I tend to wear light gloves which helps a lot.

That was my number two most common injury. LOL. Now I'm usually smart enough (after my wife's suggestion following an impact), to hang a large towel over the metal bar when the stairs are raised, so that I can see or feel it and avoid impact.

While on deck wear boat shoes, toes are like a pitchfork and will snag on almost anything.

Re: I'm Suffering My Most Common Boating Injury Again

Yep the splinter problem,
or the broken toe from barefoot on deck,
or the fiberglass arm rash/scratch from reaching into an unfinished space inside the boat,
or there's the broken wrist from mis judging stepping of the boat onto the dock, with bi focals on,
or there's that clew cringle on the big genoa that waps you on the temple,
or..... slipping on the companionway ladder,
or the cockpit locker lid that weighs a ton falling from a boat wake....
don't even talk to me about the sliding companionway hatch and the top of my head!

Re: I'm Suffering My Most Common Boating Injury Again

I think Ann from Long Island (our old home waters) wins hands down. I don't even want to play after that story.

Back when we had our Pearson 365, during the first month or so of sailing season I always had bruises on my lower legs because I swear the traveller kept moving it's position. One day we were waiting for someone at the airport and a very attractive woman was waiting too. Much to my surprise my husband walks over to her and starts talking to her. She bursts into gales of laughter. I'm starting to get a little huffy about this going on right under my nose so I saunter over - you know - real casual like.

He had approached her and asked "So what kind of boat do you have?".
She told him - I think it was something pretty, like a Tayana 40 something.
She asked him how he knew?
He told her, it's simple your bruises match my wife's exactly.

We compared bruises and he was right!

If I'm sailing naked, I still wear shoes aboard.

This is my most common and stupid move while boating. Do you guys have other safety failings? Tell me a story that might make me feel better about my finger!
I can't tell you a happy story. I would be concerned about the chemicals used to treat the pile? If it has been there for years they used some nasty stuff. JMHO

Pulling down spinnaker sock while full of wind and blow the old rotator cuff. Done it three times now. What's up with that

Use a bowline on the piling or better still, take the line around the piling/cleat/whatever & back to your boat & make it fast. Then you can leave without going on dock.
Sorry about splinter.Hurt like hell don't they!

I have a bald head with a "permanent" scab from all things overhead. Same with my bony shins.

Cheers/ Len

Re: I'm Suffering My Most Common Boating Injury Again

When walking forward along the side decks, I occasionally forget about this step. This has not resulted in any real injuries so far. Just bruises and scrapes.

It is hopeless that I will develop a permanent awareness of this step as I have been walking around on this deck for 39 years.

Re: I'm Suffering My Most Common Boating Injury Again

Working alone on the boat,
Reaching down the back hatch
Slipped in up to my chest
1 Arm out, 1 in,
Couldn't move
Starting to have breath squeezed out of me
Getting REALLY worried
Cannot get enough lift on one arm
Only able to extricate using stomach muscles on hatch edge (I was younger then)!
Eventually out, bruised and scared.
