4. Baseball bat.
If the lights and siren do not scare them off then you have real bad guys on your hands. Proceed to steps 2-4 and stay below. They are at a disadvantage coming through the companionway as it is narrow and there are stairs to deal with.

Yes . the same for locking your hatch when asleep.......the main purpose of some "defenses" is to act as a communication device, if someone ignores a deterent that would stop 90% of folks then they have communicated to you by their actions that they are serious folk. Plusses and Minuses to that . Main plus is that no need to be polite with your response ...........personally I would feel comfortable defending my companionway with even a pointy stick let alone anything more useful against a dozen intruders......and IMO the odds of meeting a dozen intruders that stupid are slim to none.

Actually, I'm not a roll over type, and I don't believe in the tooth fairy or in counting on using wasp spray for anything but killing wasps. But other than that, thanks for the suggestion.

Probably took lessons from the Brady Campaign. The real experts in 'nonsense'.
The odds of being killed with a rifle, or pistol are miniscule compared to
being killed in a motor vehicle accident. Drunk or sober...

Well, not while aboard your boat… I only know a few cruisers who have a bike aboard and none of them ride them on deck…

6 Reasons Why Wasp Spray is Not a Substitute for Pepper Spray - eXtension
It is hard to change minds that are made up, but I would love to see anyone's data that shows the effectiveness of wasp spray. Not anecdotal or 'what they feel', but some facts.

Simpler and as readily available as a hammer or a tube of toothpaste is this combo, 100% certified by the ATF as not a firearm, period. A 26.5mm flare gun (Sportsmans Guide, $100) and a Kennesaw Cannon Company (GA) sub-caliber insert that accepts a .45 Long Cold or .410 shotgun shell. This will work even in places that don't like firearms, as long as the are not stored together in an obvious way. The insert would be invisible in a toolbox, you might have to hide a few cartridges or shells, depending on where you were dropping your hook.
I only mention this because some folks visiting this forum might hail from countries that frown upon ordinary peasants owning firearms. In that case, American catalog companies will send you the above mentioned items in an order with ordinary marine or sporting gear without batting an eyelash. Put them together you will have a single shot weapon that in the USA is legally "not a firearm." The insert even comes with an "ATF letter" from the BATFE, explaining in detail that in the USA, the insert + flare gun is NOT a firearm.
Now, Americans who want to can just purchase a real Glock, Colt, S&W etc, but for those folks from places where peasants are not allowed firearms, it might be an idea to consider. One shot of .45 Long Colt (or .410 shotgun) trumps a maniac with a machete at cockpit range, or so I have heard. Now, some pacifist sheeple around here might object, and tell you that being split from masthead to keel by a machete is preferable to defending your life (or your wife or kid's life) with an EVIL firearm....
But if you disagree with them, just google around, and buy them.

There's a whole lot of not true in this post, and it's the dangerous kind. The insert -by itself- is not a weapon. The second you put it in a flare gun, it's an AOW requiring a Class 3 liscence. Very few people have one of those. And, in any case, the point is moot. Because hiding undeclared ammunition is even more dangerous than hiding an undeclared firearm. Customs dogs are often trained to detect explosives, including plain old ammo. And if you declare ammo but no gun, don't you think that might raise a few eyebrows? Sub caliber inserts are not a safe replacement for a gun, they just complicate the issue. Either go legit with the proper paperwork and a gun safe aboard, or stick to other methods which won't land you in prison.

Your first link above is from 2006 and is no longer in effect. The current ATF determination is that it is not a firearm and it's perfectly legal for a non-felon to own. The second link from 2012 has scary pictures of the lousy inserts for cheap plastic and pot metal 25mm flare guns which were not strong enough for the forces involved, obviously. This has been known and understood for a decade or more. The milsurp Warsaw Pact steel 26.5mm flare guns are plenty strong when used with the steel KCC insert. The "The High Road" thread is from 2004 and contains a mixed bag of ideas, some valid, some not.
