Re: Health Insurance for Cruisers - What do you use ?

Just a comment on the political debate regarding "Obama Care".

I suggest that you download the health care bill and actually read through it. It is huge of course, but you can scan through the subjects pretty quickly. Like me, I think you will be disturbingly shocked to discover that most of the things that opposing politicians say about Obama Care are flat out lies.

Back when they were having the final big debate over it's passage in congress, I happened to be near a television (I intentionally don't own one) and was watching some of this raging debate. Some of the rhetoric being tossed about sounded ridiculous. So, I downloaded the current draft as I watched the debate and started checking facts. I was stunned to discover that most of what I was hearing -- vigorously stated on national television -- was simply bald faced lies.

Regardless of your politics, you should find this behavior by our elected representatives very disturbing.

Re: Health Insurance for Cruisers - What do you use ?

So much wonderful information here! Thank you, everyone. I am just lurking here, collecting information, to figure out catastrophic coverage for my little family of four (with a significant pre-existing condition).

Belizesailor, I agree with you completely about the problem with political thought. That political memes are crafted to hit us in the most stark and emotional terms. They are a kind of emotional pornography. And that if we can look at these same issues in a more detached way, the straw men, logical fallacies, and etc evaporate, and it usually becomes a moral decision for our society that would be much easier to discuss.

But... of course, given that, I really do not think we should discuss the specifics of this issue on this forum.

You might find this site of use:

[QUOTE=Mike OReilly;883048]I in no way want to sound like an American basher here
QUOTE]

Mike,

In my travels I have encountered a lot of America-bashing and have come to the conclusion that only Canadians should be allowed to do so. My reasons are:

1. They have the most practice and are most accomplished at it.
2. They know us best so their bashing is more likely to be grounded in reality.
3. If there are no Americans around to defend themselves, Canadians will often step up to do so. I don't know whether this is because they simply can't abide amateurs or whether it's kind of a family thing.

You could extend this and say that only Kiwis should Ozzie-bash and only Scots and Irish should Brit-bash.
