Have You Ever Been a Victim of Boat Crime ?

As the topic says, I have been cruising full time for four months now and have been robbed of dinghy/outboard and have been boarded and items stolen from the cockpit, before I left people always said boat crime was rare. so hence the poll!

Wow, all that in 4 months? Where are you cruising -- Samolia?

I've never had anything taken from my boat. A few petty thefts shore side, but on the boat never.

Re: Have you ever been a victim of boat crime?

We have cruised extensively for over 20 years and have never had anything stolen. But we don't leave things lying around and the boat, dinghy and outboard are always locked and the dinghy and outboard chained to something. Never been boarded either, not sure why. Perhaps you need to reevaluate your security and make yourself less of a target. Chuck

Re: Have you ever been a victim of boat crime?

I used to live in Spain and Italy, and can say that there seems to be a much greater rate of petty theft in those places than where I live now in California. Of course, I could move to a "bad" neighborhood somewhere nearby and have a much different point of view regarding my vulnerability to theft.
Sail the Aland Islands and the Finnish coast and I'd wager you'd have less stuff stolen. Unless you leave a bottle of liquor out. Then, all bets are off.

Key seems to be insurance as you never know who will be a victim.
