Guns again

Hi all. I know the topic of Guns, got rather long winded. But we had on our news last night of a NZ sailor that has just been arrested in Indonesia for having un-declared guns on board. This was a large vessel with a large crew onboard. His story is that he had them for self defence against Pirate attack.
He was told by some athourity to hide them and not declare he had them. But the Indonesian Customs officials found them and arrested him.
Not sure what the moral of all that is. Declear weapons or not have them at all.
By the way, they were pretty seriouse firearms. Not sure where he would have got them, but they weren't something you would buy in our NZ gun shops.

Some weapons are easy to manufacture, like canon's, RPG's and remote control bombs. ie: radio control airplanes/rockets. With the technology of today the average person with chemisty and mechanical know-how can whip up a number of things.

And in some ports one can buy almost anything they want. Especially in the Indian Ocean reigon.

These looked full on military weapons. Not the sort of thing you would want to shoot a Duck with, at least if you wanted any Duck left to eat. A few Automatic weapons and something that looked too big to even shoot an elephant with.
I can imagine, well actually, I probably couldn't imagine what sort of stuff you could get your hands on up there in Indonesia.

Kiwi or Aussi?

Your story about the Kiwi arrested seems like it may be the same story as appeared on another forum as follows:

Well known Aussie sailor ( has won Syd/ Hbt) arrested in Indonesia for carrying guns.. about three of them , to protect himself and crew , while in the Straits of Malacca( well known pirate haunt) he has already encountered pirates in his sailing career ( no not the chandlers / mariners type, but real live ones. He was arrested on Saturday and faces 20 years in a hell hole if convicted.

Seems a backpacker he picked up in Broome was a bit upset and dobbed him in to the Indonesians , saying he was a gun runner.

You know the story, if he is innocent he will be claimed as our's, if quilty, he's Australian. The person is Chris Packer. I think he maybe Ausie. I haven't heard of him. But the first News item said he was a prominint NZ sailor. The second then said he had NZ ties. So looks like he must be quilty, as we are quickly dis-owning him

Rather confirms my view of carrying these sort of weapons. Apart from the difficulty of procuring the correct type and number of weapons to be able to outgun a pirate, and the necessary training to make effective use of them,

The real problem comes when you are carrying them and enter a foreign country.
