So my wife and I were talking about a long south pacific passage. She says that if I died 10 days from shore that she would have to dump me overboard. I told her that she shouldn't throw me overboard and wait until we reached port. She say's that I would decay and become disease ridden and the boat would be unlivable.

What actually happens.

I agree with your wife - unless she can shove your body into the freezer, a burial at sea is probably the best idea.

Throw me overboard. I wouldn't have it any other way. That said, I believe that is acceptable practice under those circumstances for the exact reasons she pointed out.

Another good reason not to get a liferaft.

I'm just afraid she will dump me without checking my pulse if I over sleep on a long watch.

Don't be daft!

2 people on a boat. 1 arrives at port and says the other died of natural causes and was buried at sea.

Sound at all suspicious as you try to collect the insurance/inheritance?

Put up with the smell for a few days till you can get it to shore! Then you have the evidence (2 knives in the back) of how Hubbie died!

Get on the HF, Satphone or whatever. Tell some land based authority (perferably 1st world) what happened and ask what to do next.

If you make a decision on your own, it will considered wrong at least by somebody. Hand ball the decision to those who make the rules.

This is another justification for carrying sufficient spirits on board.

Admiral Nelson's body was persevered by being placed in a cask of brandy for the trip back from his victory at Trafalgar.

The legend is that the barrel was mostly empty when it arrived in England from sailors taking a sip through a straw - the origin of the term "tapping the admiral"

I've never heard the term "tapping the admiral"; I have heard of Nelson's blood - rum, which afaik was his preservative, not brandy.

I'm sure there are lots of sailors who have "tapped the admiral" although I never heard it called that before.

Though Nelson’s body was preserved in this way, albeit in brandy not rum, the story is clearly a folk legend.
A related expression, “suck the monkey”, was current in the London docks in the nineteenth century, describing the practice of boring a hole in a cask of spirits to steal the contents.
